Started by me, Ryan Mulberger. What is it? It is the group effort to compile the largest and hopefully the most complete collection of live, promo and Interview Flaming Lips audio. What format? We want to keep the audio "lossless." Which means saving the audio data as .wav, .shn, .flac, .ape. (see http://www.etree.org). (We prefer .shn.) Purity: I hope to "weed out" inferrior audio files from circulation. Currently the average trader burns his or her own CD-Rs (at 16 bit / 44.1 Khz). In the past many people traded cassette tapes, that were Generations copied from other copies. Hopefully, this project can find master copies and share better audio files (than those CD-Rs made from the cassette tapes). I know there are many flaming lips DAT recordings out there as well as many other Master cassette tapes, Minidiscs, etc. I want to make sure we preserve all recordings at their highest potential sampling and bit rate. I hope you will all join in and collaborate shows. All you have to do is join the Flaming Lips DC++ group here: Just get ahold of me, Mulberger, and well evaluate & compare what we have. It is extremely important to put the seeder's information down in the text file. ( A "seeder" is the orignal person who began sharing the audio files that "flourish and spread" all over the internet and HUB users.) That way we know who the files came from and can contact them about show related info, recording equipment or sound quality. * Analog Cassette Masters: If anyone has master bootlegs they made on cassette tapes, I can now make 24 bit / 96 Khz recordings out of them. I urge you to digitally preserve them, otherwise the cassette tapes ages every day and will one day finally jam, rip, flake, gum up or disintegrate! Data: I also hope this will result in more text files on each bootleg's setlist, date, location, venue name, band line-up, the opening bands, and recording equipment. Preservation: I plan on making master back-up data DVD-Rs of all the shows. I will continue to share all the shows I have and will be leaving my computer on as much as possible so that other fans can enjoy these great live shows. I think it is important to make a physical DVD-R back-up of all the shows so that other fans will have continued access to free shared live music files. The DVD-Rs will be used to distribute large amounts of files to those without hi-bandwidth modems or for trading tree ("Pyramid") schemes. Lastly, the back-ups will be provided to our homepage in hopes of one day having the official OK and financial backing to put these on a webpage via our own server...big dreams there! I am building a new computer than can run 8 hard drives, so I will serve as a 24/7 HUB access. I will have a 1.5Mbps cable modem hooked up to it (but I don't know the upload speed yet). Video?: I plan on making DVD-Rs from various bootleg VHS Tapes. This is another large project within itself. I would like to get ahold of the Master recordings for preservation. I will keep everyone posted via the website below as to when this project begins. I'm also planning a LP > DVD-R (24/96) project. But that's just for personal use (not for trades). So basically, if you can prove you own the record or CD or CS, you can have a hi-fi DVD-Audio of it providing you pay for the blank media and shipping. Feel free to e-mail me at: soyelcomandante@hotmail.com Website info: http://flaminglips.netfirms.com (please visit! There's a trade post, discography, bootlegography, tourography, interviews, etc!) Do you have Master Bootlegs? If you don't have the time or the transferring equipment, let me do it for you. Currently I only have the capabilities to convert 8-Tracks, Cassettes, LPs, and 7"s. If you have DAT bootlegs, you may want to find a friend that can make an identical wav file from it. e-mail me at: soyelcomandante@hotmail.com ----------------------------The (unofficial) Flaming Lips Taping Policy-------------------------- Scott D. Booker on the Flaming Lips taping policy (May 15, 2002) "Our attitude has always been - you can tape all you want - but we don't want to be involved. In other words, we'll tell the clubs we're ok with it, but we don't have the time to go into any special effort to hook you up to the board or anything. Some clubs have policies of not allowing tapers, because they tape the shows and try to sell them to the bands. We can't override that - it's usually in the contract for the show that we're not even allowed to tape - that's why we don't put too much effort into it. Our show is so difficult to make happen in the first place that we have to put all of our energy into that!" (end quote) Personally, I stick to stealth taping the Flaming Lips shows. It gives you a good chance of getting your recording equipment in and leaving with a decent recording. To date, I have never seen anyone openly taping a flaming lips concert. - Ryan Mulberger ------------------------------The Official Mercury Rev Taping Policy----------------------------- Mercury Rev features Jonathan Donahue (of Flaming Lips fame). What's pretty cool is the like bootlegs! We do too! So, they encourage and OPENLY allow kids to tape their shows. They say they don't like video bootlegs, but the kids seems to videotape the band anyhow and the band doesn't make a fuss about it. So, this gives you a great chance to perfect your bootlegging skills without all that nervous looking over your shoulder stuff. There's a good possibility you can bring in microphone stands and all the other recording gadgetry you have. They say they will set aside room by the soundboard, but my experince was thier soundman said "setup anywhere you want." There was no designated "special" recording area, like at phish concerts. Oh, and their soundman did not offer me a patch into the console. I didn't ask and he didn't offer. So it's probably best not to mess with it since they allow you to tape live shows. This is what their website says: "A message for anyone interested in making an audio recording of a live Mercury Rev show: please feel free to do so, what's ours is yours. You may want to check with the venue beforehand to be sure that they will allow it. We'll do our best to set aside an area somewhere near the mixing console for you to set up. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a direct feed to the console. Eventually, we would like to post some of these live shows on our site, so if you've got some recordings that you'd like to share via our website, contact us." webmaster@mercuryrev.com (Taken from http://www.mercuryrev.com/content/Welcome.html) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ercuryrev.com/content/Welcome.html) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -
