Hope you're all okay down there. Or should that be "hopeyou all are okay"? Hug those floors and stay away from the windows. No atheists in tornado territory! Typing with dishpan hands after doing the week's laundry in the sink using shampoo for detergent. Did it with Denorex in Memphis. No cobwebs on my shoe and no dandruff on my socks. Great massage for guitar playing fingers, squeezing and wringing t-shirts out in hot water before hanging them on the towel racks and shower curtain rod. A kind soul who read that I intended to do my laundry today offered the use of his washing machine, thanks, but it's good to have a chore to do on the road. A homely task that puts the alien territory of a string of hotel rooms in proper perspective. Little patch of Chicago sunlight, apparently the first in a long time. Believe I'll go for a stroll. Set out in a cheerful frame of mind, borne along Dearborn by a jaunty tailwind. But after awhile, for no apparent reason, I began to feel a tinge of bittersweet melancholy. Took me awhile to figure out - I had the blues. Not just blues, but Chicago Blues: a certain emotional curvature native to the Windy City. Very different from, say, Memphis Blues which is more of a "down and out" feeling. Had a good show last night, felt an immediate strong heart connection to the audience, very genuine. Got a bit carried away reciting Longfellow but they let me have my fun My back is in better shape than usual midway into a tour. No guitar strap shoulder. The secret was to get a really heavy guitar. It encourages me to sit down once in awhile. No law decrees that I must stand all the time. On my feet, the radio microphone allows me to pace, to stalk from one side of the stage to the other as I play. Very seldom do I choose to stand center stage to deliver a song. Using a mikestand is like being in a strait jacket where, if I wander a few inches from the mike, the words get lost. Everything I sing gets heard now - a whole new dimension and very satisfying, encouraging verbal improvisation. Used earphone monitors last night, for which I got fitted in Eugene, collecting them in Chicago. They allow me to hear all the nuances of my playing which results in more detail in note selection and better dynamic control. Though there's no absolute need for earphone monitors on this tour, it's a good idea to get used to them now because they'll be necessary in the larger venues come Summer. The way I wander on stage I occasionally get my feet wrapped in the guitar cord and have to do a little tap dance to untangle - probably oughta put the guitar on radio too. (no sooner thought of than, via a quick call, arranged to become reality, this very night, by soundmonster O'Neil.) Great luxury having three nights in one venue. Already sound-checked and ready to roll, leaving the day free for my favorite pastime ... practicing guitar. Limber the old fingerbones and brush up a few numbers people been calling for. --=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=--=-=-=-==-=-=---=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-= Set 1: 1 rh2002-04-29t01.aiff 02:18 (intro) 2 rh2002-04-29t02.aiff 12:30 (intro2) 3 rh2002-04-29t03.aiff 05:38 Uncle John's Band 4 rh2002-04-29t04.aiff 08:22 Ghost Riders in the Sky> Franklin's Tower 5 rh2002-04-29t05.aiff 03:19 ?
