This was only one of two shows that I have recorded at Palookaville in Santa Cruz, the other being Rat Dog in 2001. Both shows were open taping. For the Medeski Martin & Wood show I brought my physical therapist, Paul, with me because he was into jazz fusion. I was seeing Paul at his PT office because of a broken finger I had sustained the year before while riding a carnival ride at the California Mid State fair. Palookaville was a shoebox-type hall with a flat floor and the stage at one of the narrow ends and a bar at the other. It could get really hot and stuffy in there when a lot of people were packed in. I had just purchased my Lunatec V2 microphone preamp and used it for only this one show before I realized that it was much too big to hide at stealth shows, which were the kind of recordings I made most often, So I returned it.
I eventually bought one used years later because they are a really clean sounding preamp. I remember not caring much for DJ Logic, but I really liked Medeski Martin and Wood's sound.
I also remember being shocked at gas prices on the way home because they were starting to go up.
I think I paid $1.55 a gallon in Salinas and thought that was highway robbery!
