moe. AKA New York, NY 9/7/1995 Original recording: Soundboard -> Denon DTR80p -> DAT (master @16 bit/48khz) Transfer: Sony R500->Sound Devices 722 Mastered: Soundforge Audio Studio 10.0a - All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits. First applied 20 band Graphic EQ boosting the mid bass range (225-40hz), rolling off the low bass slightly (29 hz and below), cutting the high mids (mostly in the 1.3-3.6k range) and very slightly rolling off the highs (5.1-15k). Then I applied slight volume normalization at beg of show to even out when I was still setting my recording levels. Then I did the 48k sample rate conversion to 44.1k sample rate conversion using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter, and dithered back down to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, High dither settings. Tracked in CDWav. (Note the raw transfer files from my DAT are in my personal archives so if you think you could do a better job on this recording, by all means get in touch.) 1. tuning/banter - where the *f* is Al? 2. 32 Things 3. banter - suggest a name for the previous song (Ziggy Stardust teases) 4. St. Augustine 5. Moth 6. banter - that song was called 32 Things 7. Brent Black 8. banter/Looney Tunes theme 9. Defrost Kelley -> 10. Akimbo 11. Mexico 12. Timmy Tucker -> 13. Call Any Vegetable (Frank Zappa) jam (w/Lyrics) -> 14. Timmy Tucker 15. banter - aggression and love 16. Seat Of My Pants 17. banter 18. Rebubula 19. tuning/more Ziggy Stardust teases/inviting up Jimmy John from Yolk 20. Don't Fuck With Flo * * = w/JimmyJohn from Yolk on vocals moeLinks lists a "The Internet Tune" jam in Timmy Tucker, but I don't know how to identify it. Part of the CMJ Music Festival: New Spirit, Andrew Vladik, Yolk and Harpoon were also on the bill. Yolk played just before moe. and Harpoon played just after. Mike Strazza was the drummer at this show Look for the Yolk set to be posted on archive.org shortly. Taper notes: This is BARN11, the 11th in my continuing series of fresh archival transferring (and mastering) from my DAT collection. Just to keep things interesting, each recording that I work on generally presents its own challenges. Some need no work at all (BARN10), some have been encoded in odd ways (BARN5 which needed Emphasis removed), and others have their own challenges to deal with (vocals too loud on BARN6). Well, this one I'd been avoiding for a while because I knew it was going to be a challenge as the original DAT was basically unlistenable. At this point in my taping history the only microphone I owned was a Sony ECM-959 stereo mic. And while that mic made good enough recordings, it had a loose cable that crackled when the mic was moved or touched and it really wasn't reliable enough to use at this show. I'd hoped some other taper(s) would show up to the show with some mics, but alas nobody did. Brendan O'Neill was nice enough to patch me directly out of the soundboard, but what I know in 2009 and didn't know then, which is that in a small club you will mostly get vocals and cymbals out of the board(and keys if the band has a keyboardist). As I said, this show was barely listenable in its raw state, which was very shrill and had no bass at all. So my main task was to EQ it to the best of my ability to tamp down on the shrill high end, reduce some of the vocals and cymbals, and boost the mid bass quite a bit without boosting the kick drum too much. I think I did a pretty good job -- in fact it sounds better than I ever dreamed it would! My recollections from the actual show: This is a long gone venue in Manhattan that only seemed to host shows for a year or two. It used to be right on East Houston Street and was on the second floor of a building -- it was a smallish room (maybe 300 people?) and had big windows. I do recall that this was a multiband show as part of the CMJ festival and that it was a pretty late "school" night for a weeknight when I had to work the next day. It was my first time hearing the new (then) 32 Things and DeFrost Kelley. Fun times -- the band was far more "RAW" in these days, and even though they had been doing quite well at Wetlands at this time I don't remember a lot of people coming out on this night and consequently the band was pretty loose, which makes for a fun listen! Transferred and mastered Nov/Dec 2009.
