the tour story:
This was a show without Dylan/Petty at a small clamshell style amphitheatre which still holds shows in 2022. For the year and era of Grateful Dead, this show is a bit of an anamoly in its' song selection and performance. That being a stellar one, with Jerry's vocals and guitar playing top notch given that he would slip into a diabetic coma 28 days later.
"Feel Like A Stranger" starts off slow but closes with a nice solo run. "Friend of the Devil" gave way to "Mama Tried > Big River" a good pair of cowboy tunes for the mid-west show. Then they run through "Loser" and a tasty "Cassidy", a bluesy "West LA Fadeaway" then landing on a 10 minute "Let it Grow" closer. Garcia was up front and leading the charge with some wicked soloing albeit another short first set.
"Bertha" opened the second set in an extremely unusual opening slot. The band played a very solid rendition, then Weir led them through a plucky "Women are Smarter". Jerry rips the vocals in "Ship of Fools" then ends it without any jamming. They band stops and abruptly goes into "Smokestack Lightnin'" where Jerry plays a nice give and take with Brent's Hammond at songs' end, segueing into 'He's Gone". The post drums was classic Dead ending with "Good Lovin'". "The Mighty Quinn" (Quinn The Eskimo), another Dylan cover, closed out the evening with a solid audience sing-a-long. "When Quinn the Eskimo Gets here, everybody's gonna want to dose" indeed!
