[h/t deadbase V] [2] There is a grinding sound from the PA, thought to be Weir's rig distorting, throughout this entire spring tour. It is present only when they are playing, not during breaks. I listened to several FOB audience sources from this tour and they all have this "noise". I am going to discuss the Grateful Dead scene overall in 1986, rather than focusing on the personal travel tales. In a large way Jerry's "health issues" were front and center to all of us "tourheads", having had a Mikel and several other flyers going around the parking lot discussing Jerry's "failing health". I am hoping to attach some of those if I can locate them in time. I would also like to dispel the notion seen so often in print about the band and the quality of their performances being terrible during this timeframe. This was simply untrue. Some nights Jerry or Bob were off and not fully there, but plenty of nights when they would just wail and put out some fine sets. Yes, most of 1986 has short sets, some first sets are barely one hour long. My premise here is that if you listen carefully enough to the entire seven months before Jerry's coma you will hear some of the weirdest, worst, and best the Grateful Dead had to offer. In the "best" category might be the new song selections. On this recording the Bob Dylan cover, "Visions of Johanna" stands out. Of course, we know now, but did not in March 1986 that the band would announce the summer tour with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty as his backup band. That hindsight goes a long way toward understanding the emergence of so many Dylan tunes during this year. And back to the earlier point, how in the hell could Bob and Jerry recite the lengthy lyrics to those songs but forget the words to Truckin'? Amazing and puzzling at the same time. Put the flubbed lyrics and short first sets in the worst category. Then there was the weird. They ended Philadelphia The Spectrum 3-24-1986 with one song, Morning Dew, out of space. The reason, confirmed after all these years with video evidence, was "sometime late in the show, Bill was hit by a bottle and was totally angry and flipped off the crowd and that was why they left the stage". ## For this specific opening of the spring tour show, the Garcia rendition of Dylan's "Quinn the Eskimo (Mighty Quinn)" is quite nicely played. Although they started playing that at New Years Eve 1985, this was another oddity which didn't truly make sense in the set lists until the announcement of the upcoming summer tour. This first set was not one of the short ones, with ten songs played, including some scorching Cowboy tunes. The "China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider" is soaring. Bobby and Jerry are interacting with power and passion. More than one reviewer on archive.org noted this show had some excellent moments. ## h/t reference the review in: https://archive.org/details/gd1986-03-24.fob.schoeps.lochner.gems.103442.flac16 length expanded size cdr WAVE problems fmt ratio filename 1:58.51 20935196 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.3438 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t01.flac 7:34.35 80167964 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.5966 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t02.flac 5:35.36 59178716 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6334 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t03.flac 1:25.39 15085772 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.5560 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t04.flac 7:36.03 80445500 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6617 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t05.flac 6:38.42 70306028 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6653 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t06.flac 3:23.16 35846876 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6545 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t07.flac 3:58.42 42082028 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6380 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t08.flac 8:33.47 90603788 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.5649 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t09.flac 11:46.72 124707788 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.5996 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t10.flac 7:18.26 77324396 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6318 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t11.flac 3:03.56 32413680 B -b- -- ---xx flac 0.6503 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s1t12.flac 6:23.32 67636508 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6432 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t01.flac 6:04.63 64357820 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6740 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t02.flac 18:51.64 199658972 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6349 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t03.flac 3:29.30 36938204 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6197 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t04.flac 4:38.11 49065116 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.5456 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t05.flac 4:01.55 42641804 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6665 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t06.flac 7:36.20 80485484 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6813 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t07.flac 8:04.06 85391756 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6314 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t08.flac 3:32.50 37514444 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6746 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t09.flac 4:14.42 44904428 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.6838 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t10.flac 0:53.44 9452732 B --- -- ---xx flac 0.5633 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t11.flac 4:36.40 48779920 B -b- -- ---xx flac 0.6730 gd1986-03-19beyerm201-16s2t12.flac 141:20.22 1495924920 B 0.6296 (24 files)
