This really historical event was only recorded by chance.  HereÂ’s the story behind "Bobby's holiday-tape" (as I remember it) in brief:
The show wasnÂ’t planned or announced anywhere. Seems that in those days the Prana House offered an open stage to anyone who wanted to play gueasts or locals - and on two magic nights in January 1998 for many tourists a dream came true. Bob Weir and Matt Kelley were on holiday in Thailand and jammed there together with other guests. By coincidence a German backpacker who was also a deadhead, heard the music as he was walking on the beach and ran right back to his hotel room, grabbed his Walkman and was able to at least record a bit of the show.  He sometimes had to stop the tape inbetween the songs to save tapespace.
So this is as much and as good as it gets.

There are also some similar recordings from Koh Tao available as video on youtube. They were recorded on the following evening at the same location but with a different lineup (except, of course, for Bob & Matt).  So go ahead and grab ‘em there.
I got this from a friend of the taper himself via snail mail in 1998. It hasnÂ’t been traded a lot and I donÂ’t think this has ever been in circulation in the virtual world. New to DIME and for sure new to a lot of deadheads.
