NOTE: The wind is apparent on all of set 2 of this recording. We used factory windscreens and it was not enough to reduce those winds at Red Rocks. The AKG c422 became intermittent due to fast transient distortions from high winds during set 1 and was substituted with the Beyer m201's for set 2.

The tour story:
Arriving at Golden Colorado the night before from Arlington, I met the rest of the Texas crew with Tom and Sean, at the Golden Days Inn. Golden is about 10 minutes from Red Rocks. Feyline, the promoter, had set these shows up as 2 PM afternoon shows, Thursday through Saturday. Earlier in the year, the community had a meeting where the residents of Morrison and Golden tried to disallow the band (of course, us fans being the reason) to play that year. The 2 PM start times were the compromise. I am pretty sure they opened the park at 8 AM and that doors were at Noon. We had decided to park in the top lot and run down the steps to get to the OTS. We got caught in huge line backups and didn't even make it close to the first row behind the soundboard. We wound up aboout 6 rows back and off to the right quite a bit.

For set 1 we used the AKG c422 and we kept seeing it clipping with the high gusts of wind. Between sets we had to break out the Beyer M201's and set them up for set 2. Sean plugged his deck into someone's Isomax Binaurals in case things went south. Set 1 had several 3-5 minute long breaks between songs as they were having obvious issues with the frontline. It did feature a nice set of tunes, with the "Candyman" so slow and Colorado mountain mellow. The "Beat it On Down the Line" and "Stagger Lee" had some Bobby and Jerry gusto with both vocals and guitars. What a sweet, long and well played "Let it Grow" to end the set!

For set 2 The sound issues seemed tamed. The "Scarlet Begonias" > "Fire on the Mountain" was a classic journey through the ups and downs of each song. The "Estimated Prophet" middle jam is exuberant with great interplay between all instruments. Jerry croaked out the "Eyes of the World" vocals so plaintively, then followed with some triplet sequences on the guitar which dripped with  the joyousness of the tune. Out of drums Phil landed on a fat intro to "Gimme Gimme Some Lovin'" which had a bit of poor vocal timing during the chorus parts. The wind took over a bit during "Wharf Rat", adding to the soundscape. Bobby ended the set with a sweet Sunshine Daydream. Jerry closed out the Thursday matinee with a beautiful "Brokedown Palace" and as we left we knew two more shows at this wonderful venue were to follow!
