The entire show suffers from the infamous summer of 1985 PA distortion which was later found to have some origination from Phil's pick ups in the new 6 string bass. We knicknamed them "Phil pharts".

the tour story:
We had many freaky people staying at Seans and Sean's sisters house in McLean VA. This day was a Monday so I am sure the locals had to deal with work issues or taking the day off. The show the night before was so good musically and we were going through the tapes already making copies on Seans home decks off of our D5's. There was certainly a good run for food this day, I thought we may have had a crab boil, but Sean recalls maybe just 3 Pigs sandwiches for ten people or something like that. We gathered at Sean's for so many GD and other shows over the years certainly "all the years combine". Then off to Merriweather Post. In those days Sean's crew parked at the mall across from the main lot which made for a decent hike. Once inside, we set up in almost the same location as the night before, maybe 20 feet closer.

"Dancin in the Street" opener pretty much nailed the energy level and the twirling and heavy dancin' began early. Some blues was offered in the form of Duprees Diamond Blues, which is really more of a ragtime hybrid, and the Walkin' Blues. Bobby had seemed to favor this tune during 1985 and his vocals were playful yet solid. The "Stagger Lee" was loose and playful and segued into a raunchy, lengthy, "Let it Grow".

Set 2 began with a Scarlet > Fire that had some heavy jamming in the segue and then the solo parts of Fire. They continued into what I term "classic Dead mode" with a mighty fine "Playing in the Band" > "Uncle John's Band". Jerry obviously wanted to play "China Doll" but Bobby exited quickly so Jerry and Brent stayed onstage and jammed this 'Doll' like chord sequence for almost 3 minutes while Mickey followed them with snare drum flairs. That spaciness led to an intense Drums and Space leading into a "Dear Mr. Fantasy" which was presented in a very relaxed, unrushed manner. This led to a GDTRFB which was also laid back and relaxed but Jerry started driving the solo section and had the band (and crowd) groovin'. They closed the set with a long and punchy "Good Lovin'" which gave way to a two song encore featuring a crazed Bobby on "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" which surprised us all when it gave way to another cover tune, a beautiful weekend closing "It's All Over Now Baby Blue".
