the tour story:
The Hance story continues and for this show we grew one more person, my girlfriend Fran took the train out of Manhattan where she had visited her friend Bernadette the day before. We stayed at JJ's house that night with about 10 others, Sean, Gary, Pinney included. I recall sleeping bags everywhere, his kitchen being invaded by beers and deli food as well as his dog, a cool Irish Setter, running around grabbing as much pets and attention as she could. These shows were the great melding of the Maine, Syracuse, Virginia and Long Island heads including many tapers but not all tapers. We were lucky enough to be presented with a strong summer of shows upcoming and would have many opportunites to gather at each other's houses. John's presence for us was large because he was such a catalyst who knew so many heads and had a large passion for tape collecting.

For this show I remember Fran's black leather jacket being something almost unique to the deadheads attire with our tickets were toward the rear and we were stubbed down into the tapers area just in front of the board. For second set Sean and Gary gave us their 13th row tickets and we went up front as the music began and Fran almost got crushed by a dude wearing a black leather jacket while we, he, and other fans rushed the stage up the two aisles. When we made it to the seats the atmosphere was intense, the lights on the stage so bright at times and our seats were so close we could see the spit coming out of Bobby's mouth as he sang. I surmise without recalling exactly that we chose to not record from the 13th row seats due to security telling us that Dan Healy said second section or farther back, no stands up front.

This specific recording was from Murtha and Steel's seats and being Nassau security was so tough you can hear the security guys going up the aisles clearing them out temporarily- "You'R in my aisle-LETS GO!". For those who were never at a show in Nassau Coliseum, of course the aisle on the other side where no security was would fill up, so they would take turns clearing out each aisle after about 10 minutes into each set.

Set 1- Musically speaking the Iko-Iko opener is strong with a nice transition into the Greatest Story Ever told, one of my all time tour favorite tunes. Jerry flubs the words to the middle verse of Althea and the crowd goes nuts over it- deadheads! They bring it in the jam section at the end though and again the crowd shows their appreciation. Bobby banged out a stomping Minglewood, with Phil's strong bass support. The band then ran through a soulful Row Jimmy which contained some beautiful keyboard sounds from Brent.

Set 2- The Second set opener combination of I Need a Miracle > Bertha had great energy but no extended ending to Bertha. The Looks Like Rain had the crowd quieted down and around the mics vey respectful, we got lucky. At the end of He's Gone you can hear Jerry and Phil start up a Truckin' jam but Bobby wasn't going to play it, so they noodled a bit and Jerry was the last one to leave stage before drums. Coming out of drums Mickey gets loud with some marimba sounds then space is noodly until Jerry decides to push the Other One. Then Bobby gets loud with whammy bar riffs headed into a spacey Other One, Even BRent gets radical on this version. Jerry pulls out of the jam abruptly landing on China Doll, and nails the vocals while Brent does this kaleidoscope piano stuff. Very trippy. They don't truly finish Doll and do some sweet comping and the transition from Throwing Stones into NFA is also stretched out a bit, the band seemed particularly "up" for this show.
