She took the train out of Manhattan where she had visited her friend Bernadette the day before. We stayed at JJ's house that night with about 10 others, Sean, Gary, Pinney included. I recall sleeping bags everywhere, his kitchen being invaded by beers and deli food as well as his dog Brandy, a cool Irish Setter, running around grabbing as much pets and attention as she could. These shows were the great melding of the Maine, Syracuse, Virginia and Long Island heads including many tapers but not all tapers. We were lucky enough to be presented with a strong summer of shows upcoming and would have many opportunities to gather at each other's houses. John's presence for us was large because he was such a catalyst who knew so many heads and had a large passion for tape collecting. For this show I remember Fran's black leather jacket being something almost unique to the deadheads attire. Our tickets were toward the rear but we were stubbed down into the tapers area just in front of the board. For second set Sean and Gary gave us their 13th row tickets and we went up front as the music began and Fran almost got crushed by a dude wearing a black leather jacket while we, he, and other fans rushed the stage up the two aisles. When we made it to the seats the atmosphere was intense, the lights on the stage so bright at times, the seats were so close we could see the spit coming out of Bobby's mouth as he sang. I surmise, without recalling exactly, that we chose to not record from the 13th row seats due to security telling us that Dan Healy said second section or farther back, no stands up front. This specific recording was from Murtha and Steel's seats and being Nassau security was so tough you can hear the security guys going up the aisles clearing them out temporarily- "You'R in my aisle-LETS GO - MOVE It!". For those who were never at a show in Nassau Coliseum, of course the aisle on the other side, where no security was, would fill up so they would take turns clearing out one aisle then the other. A choreographed dance amongst all the chaotic dancing. Set 1- Musically speaking the Iko-Iko opener is strong with a nice transition into the Greatest Story Ever Told, one of my all time tour favorite tunes. Jerry flubs the words to the middle verse of Althea and the crowd goes nuts over it- deadheads! They bring it in the jam section at the end, and again the crowd shows their appreciation. Bobby banged out a stomping Minglewood leading up to a soulful Row Jimmy which contained some beautiful keyboard sounds from Brent. The short set ends with a slow Esau, where Bob tries to scat sing at the end, finishing up with an equally slow Deal. Set 2- The Second set opener combination of I Need a Miracle > Bertha had great energy but no extended ending to Bertha. The Looks Like Rain had the crowd quieted down and very respectful around the mics. We got lucky. At the end of He's Gone you can hear Jerry and Phil start up a Truckin' jam but Bobby wasn't going to play it, so they noodled a bit and Jerry was the last one to leave stage before drums. Coming out of drums Mickey got loud with some marimba sounds then space is noodly until Jerry decided to push the Other One. Bobby got loud with some whammy bar riffs headed into a spacey Other One, even Brent got radical on this version. Jerry pulled out of the jam abruptly landing into China Doll; he nailed the vocals while Brent did this kaleidoscope piano stuff. Very trippy. They didn't truly finish Doll and did some sweet comping with a stretched transition from Throwing Stones into NFA. The band seemed particularly "up" for this end of tour show. - - -- shntool length expanded size cdr WAVE problems fmt ratio filename 6:15.320 108092204 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7665 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s1t01.flac 4:18.880 74557484 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7527 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s1t02.flac 8:02.240 138885164 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7289 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s1t03.flac 9:21.920 161833004 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7455 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s1t04.flac 9:56.320 171740204 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7230 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s1t05.flac 5:11.080 89591084 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7449 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s1t06.flac 8:22.540 144731540 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7549 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s1t07.flac 1:43.187 29717804 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.6895 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t01.flac 4:05.147 70602284 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7755 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t02.flac 5:58.760 103322924 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7735 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t03.flac 8:03.560 139265324 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7325 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t04.flac 14:40.600 253612844 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7303 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t05.flac 9:48.813 169578284 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7106 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t06.flac 16:04.267 277708844 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7080 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t07.flac 5:14.827 90670124 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7570 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t08.flac 5:43.040 98795564 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7235 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t09.flac 8:45.053 151215404 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7487 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t10.flac 7:10.853 124085804 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7493 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t11.flac 1:06.053 19023404 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7261 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t12.flac 5:34.030 96200546 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7412 gd1984-04-30beyerm201s2t13.flac 145:26.489 2513229838 B 0.7369 (20 files)
