# Before tune Bob says, "We notice the weather is better in the mornings. How many of ya'll would show up in the morning if we played?" The crowd goes crazy as the afternoon rain/hail this day was a drencher.

=========================================================================================================================
the tour story:
On this second day of the run, the weather was the story. The entire first set was raining steadily after a 30 degree drop in temperatures around 4 PM with a 10 minute hail storm so heavy we were going "ouch, ouch" with all the hail pellets hitting us while we were donning the red plastic $5 venue sold ponchos with the Rocks logo on them. Security had been so tough getting in gear for this second day of the run that most of our crew got turned away with only 2-3 decks and one set of mics making it in the venue. Of course, that means we are able to listen to this recording due to those earnest efforts of Sean and Gary along with Chris Nubar's crew. Apparently Chris K was unable to get the Binaurals inside or we simply cannot locate the master tapes. I recall being turned away with my Beyers in my socks and the cables around my waist.

As for the show and the rest of the weather story- part of the day is covered in this cool story:
https://dailydoseofdead.wordpress.com/2017/06/13/today-in-grateful-dead-history-june-13-1984-red-rocks-amphitheater-morrison-co/
My recollections listening back revolve around the first set rain, the clearing of the skies for Stella Blue, and getting all of the wet gear out to the car into the motel room then having to carefully dry off the electronics. A weather shortened seven song set including the obligatory rain song, Cold Rain and Snow, during which the rain sure seemed cold after 90 degree temperatures dropped into the 60's while it hailed and rained. Oddly, this was and is one of the magical charms of being able to see concerts at Red Rocks, and while a nuisance, the weather IS part of the experience.

This Hell in a Bucket has a few technical glitches but between it and Candyman, you can hear the excitement in the crowd plus Bobby comes out and says: "Hail the Size of Beachballs". I can attest it was "only" marble sized for us on the Rocks, but when we heard the local news later some towns did have softball size hail from that storm system. Jerry is emotive on the Candyman vocals with great interplay between his and Bobby's guitars. At the beginning of CC Rider you can hear the crowd cheering a lightning sighting; be reminded when listening that the rain was steadily falling on us the entire first set, it is a wonder the recording sounds as OK as it does (not our finest nor the worst). Phil's bass comes in stronger during Ramble on Rose and one person on LMA claims he saw a huge dump of water come off the side of the roof and land on Bobby; I recall seeing Phil soaking wet having wandered a bit outside of the roof's cover! This version of Brother Esau was quick and raw as it is obvious they were trying to get off the stage to wait out the rain. You can hear a few drops of water on the mics just at the start of Cold Rain and even the crowd's reception to the tune was a bit subdued. There is a noticeable howl of PA feedback about 90 seconds in. The first instrumental break Jerry and Brent bravely try to jam it out but they had to pull it back and at 6 minutes 19 seconds it was one of the shortest versions that summer. An incredibly short Don't Ease Me In ended with the boys almost running for the shelter under the stage.

After waiting out the rain with a 45 minute set break the second set opened with Bobby saying, "We noticed the weather is better here in the morning. Hello, we need to take a vote, we need a show of hands, how many of you would show up if we played in the morning?". The last part is on this recording, complete with the crowd's raucous response as they wind into China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider; which gets sweet Jerry solo treatments throughout. The "Cool Colorado Rain" line brought up a cheer as the end jam crescendo'd through the Rocks. The five song pre drums continued through to a rousing Let it Grow a tribute to both the weather and the crowd's resilience. The Wheel transitioned out of space with the band swinging into solid Grateful Dead mode, working out a beautiful Stella Blue through Sugar Magnolia, then playing a Baby Blue encore. These songs and this sequence of them, are, to my ears, perfect representations of the 1984 era; the playing wasn't as raw and exploratory as the early 80's but far from the cookie cutter sets of the later years.
