I almost didn't make it. I was set to pick up my wife Genéte from the train station in Guadalupe at 12:15 (Sunday) morning, but she called me and said that there was a big rig accident on the tracks between Ventura and Santa Barbara. (She was coming back from a trip to LA.) It was going to take several hours to open the tracks, because they had to be inspected. I guess it was a tanker truck that turned over and dropped part of its cargo on the tracks and Haz Mat was being called in. (We saw the story on the Sunday 11:00 pm news.) She said that the train was backing to Ventura and would off load people there who wanted to make other travel arrangements. I offered to drive to Ventura and pick her up. I left the house at 12:36 and I hoped to be able to go down, get her, and get back so I could leave for Paso Robles at 4 pm. Ah... Right! Everything went great until I hit Santa Barbara. The big rig accident had also affected the 101 freeway and it took 90 minutes to drive four or five miles, across town. I got to Ventura at almost 4 pm. We turned around and I got back to Santa Maria at 5:30. Genéte didn't want me to go to the show, but I wanted to, as it had been planned for a while. Fortunately my back pack was already packed. I left the house and drove like a bat out of hell to Paso and got to the winery at 6:45. (The show started at 7 pm.) I hurried through the gates and started to set up near the board. Fortunately I had called Mando on his cell yesterday and received permission for a board patch. (Unfortunately, because of band policy, I cannot release the board recording.) The show started at 7:30 and I told Mando that I would arrive at 5 pm. Again, Ah... Right! Kip Stork, the Tooth & Nail soundman and formally the house soundman at SLO Brew who I have known since 1992 when he was at Loco Ranchero, Let me plug my XLRs out of his Behringer X-32 digital soundboard. Of course, I wasn't getting any signal to my Tascam. I hurriedly set up my Neumanns on my stand and ran them into the Lunatec V2. Not having another flash recorder I had to use my old D5. I sound checked the audience rig and found I was getting HORRIBLE wind noise on the mics. My windscreens suck ass! I was forced to use part of a torn up napkin to cover the mics, and then I rubber banded the windscreens over the top. Quality windscreens are definitely next on the list of expenditures. Meanwhile, the band was ready to take the stage and I was still screwing around with the mics, and hadn't nailed down my board patch yet. So, the band was nearly onstage and I still wasn't getting a signal. 'Check it now', says Kip. Still nothing... I was starting to panic. FORTUNATELY Rick Deputy, the Los Lobos monitor mix tech was there and asked what the problem was. He told Kip that the output had to be bussed, and with a few quick jabs on buttons with his finger I had levels! YAY!!!!! That had to be the closest I have ever cut it. and still been successful. Later, Rick nearly jumped over my tape recorders trying to get to the stage when David Hidalgo called for his accordion. He said that because of the day time heat it had to be packed away. Rick had been chatting with Mando back by the board and was not aware that the band was about to go into ‘Kiko’. I got back home at 10:30pm. Genéte still not in a great mood because this day was so *censored*ty, AND I chose to go record the show. Hey, that's what I live for! I’ve been in trouble before. ;) I can't believe that this ONE tanker truck driver impacted so many lives today! I've never seen the freeway through Santa Barbara like that ever before. I’m glad to have made the show, because like so many other times, I was the ONLY taper. I was happy with the song selection. They played some stuff off of Kiko, one of my favorite Los Lobos CDs, and also played some Mexican Tex-Mex tunes. Probably the coolest song was ‘Emily’, which I had cut in half at the Fremont Theater show in San Luis Obispo on 6/17/92, my first Los Lobos show. Always glad to get a good recording of that one! Thanks to Todd Newman, the promotor, and thanks to Mando Tavarez, Los Lobos Soundman, Kip Stork (House Soundman), as well as the staff of Tooth & Nail Winery. The venue is built like a castle, with a moat in front and turrets. Mostly, thanks to the Wolves Of East LA for allowing me to record their music! Do NOT Convert To MP3. Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. ;)
