OldNeumanntapr Notes:
My Neumann microphones were brand new in early 1999 when my friend Allan stopped by my house on the way to Santa Barbara for the Dave & Tim show at the Arlington. I asked him what he was recording with and if he would like to use my Neumanns, which I had not even had a chance to use myself at the time. I told him that in exchange for the use I would like to have the master. Unfortunately, Allan had a battery problem with the Beyer preamp. I think he said that although new batteries had been purchased, one or both used ones might have been accidentally installed instead. When the red, low battery, light came on Allan shut the rig down and lost the last part of the show. He didn’t realize that when the low battery light first comes on the preamp will still run quite a long time. I was forced to run it with the red light on at a blues festival for about 45 minutes without any obvious problems. I asked him why he just didn’t re-patch the XLRs directly into the microphone inputs on the Tascam and turn on the phantom power when the preamp started to fail, and he said that he didn’t think of that. I remember that Allan thought this recording was a failure because the end is missing and he never wanted a copy of his work, hence; this source has never been shared.

The DAT has sat in a dark drawer of my tape cabinet for almost 19 years now, and has never seen the light of day. I have no idea if people will want this recording or not, as there are others from this night that are complete, but please take it for what it is. Thanks to Flying M for his post production expertise. What is here sounds pretty good to me, but at times the crowd can be a little obnoxious, especially early in the show.

Flying M Notes:
Har-Bal added 3db compression (increasing presence) + a mid-range boost in the side channel (for better separation or depth)
Lots of cleaning of screaming and whistling as the crowd was enthusiastic for the first 30 minutes or so before they finally calmed down.
Loud clapping inside of songs was muted and between songs the amplitude was reduced by 6-9dB.
Plenty of small noises removed throughout as it was an acoustic show so those little noises were a distraction.
The recording ends before the performance.

The extra mastering work took an already clear and punchy recording and made it nicer to listen to.

Do NOT Convert To MP3.
Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. ;)

Reconversion notes:
Used part of Disc 3 Track 05 and all of Disc 3 Tracks 6 through 11 from the reconverted mk4 source (Alex Coluzzi) due to the missing audio of this km140 source. Added 2.75db from the mk4 source tracks to even levels with the km140 source. Applied crossfade of the last 01:07 of Disc 3 Track 05 (from mk4 source) to Disc III Track 01 (km140 source) at the 08:17 mark to complete the track. Added Disc 3 Tracks 06 through Track 11 from the the mk4 source to complete this source. Created new flac files, fingerprints and tags to complete the source and share with the dmb community.

Thanks to Oldneumanntapr for loaning his mics to Allan to record this show. Thanks also to Flying M for the great post work in cleaning the master tape this many years later. Thanks to Allan for taping this show and sending the source to me to patch in the missing audio to make it a complete show. Thanks to Alex Coluzzi for taping the complete show and giving me the ok to use his source for the missing tracks on this recording.
