Mountain Jam Susan Tedeschi Opened Do NOT Sell, Do NOT Convert To MP-3 Tapers Notes- This was the second of only two shows that I have recorded out of state. I flew to Salt Lake City to meet up with my friend Jack Hunt, who recorded the show with me, and we first drove to Ogden, UT, to record Blue Oyster Cult at a county fair (which is a story in itself). Jack then rented a Dodge Stratus and we drove from Salt Lake City to Morrison, CO, to record the Allman Brothers Band. We got a pair of motel rooms somewhere in Wyoming and then proceeded on to Denver to visit with Jack’s friend ‘Digital’ Dave, before grabbing lunch in Denver at a restaurant that Jack knew where we got a beer and a burger. Red Rocks is the most beautiful amphitheatre I’ve ever seen. The view from the top is simply amazing. We hiked around during the day and shot some pics.(Enclosed.) Before the show we met up with the Allman Brothers Tour Manager, Kirk West, who gave us some back stage passes for after the show. After a lengthy wait in line, we managed to secure really nice 10th row seats, center right, and set up our gear. We had to hide my black-body Nikon FM at the bottom of the taping bag because even though the ‘Brothers allow recording you can be ejected for having a camera. So, I had Jack do the shooting and I ran the taping gear. I set up my Neumann KM-140s and ran them through a Lunatec V2 that I had borrowed from my friend Allan Chen because I thought it would give a better signal than my Beyer MV-100. I ran Jack’s DA-P1 patched through mine with a coaxial digital cable. The show was awesome and made even better because of the beauty of the natural rock amphitheatre. Afterward, we went backstage (which is actually Under the stage) and we met, and had our pictures taken with, Warren Haynes. I shook Warren’s hand and told him, ‘Take good care of yourself. Don’t do anything dangerous. Don’t die young like Jerry (Garcia). We want you to live a long time.’ He just smiled. We drove late into the night to get back to the same motel in Wyoming and then got back to Salt Lake City the next day. After ‘mining’ Jack’s DAT collection for a couple of days I flew back home to California. The recording had to be transferred with an EQ to restore some of the high end lost when we doubled up on windscreens at the show. Jack, who had been to Red Rocks on a number of occasions, warned me about the wind which he said can come up suddenly in the natural rock Amphitheatre. The goofy one with the black ABB t-shirt is me, and the goofier one in the white t-shirt is my buddy Jack. red_rocks2001-08-12b Bottom of the amphitheatre, near the stage. Same goofy subjects.
