The tour story:
Driving down the Western side of Colorado, only about 30-45 minutes into the state from Utah at about 4 AM we experienced mother nature. She presented us with a small town making us drive 25 or 30 MPH, and then at its' outskirts the road covered by small deer, about 200 of them. We had to stop the car and wait for a break in the movement of the herd. I can't recall if other vehicles were around besides the cop car which had just pulled us over before this. It was a typical cool but not chilly mountain morning and you could see the deer's breath as they moved across the road en masse. Will's car had been pulled over just before the deer sighting which was another reason we were going so slow. I can't recall if the driver got a ticket, I was the driver of the Saab at the time. Of course, being on tour with 6-7 people we were never in the same car with the same set of people. I know for a fact Will was not driving his car as the cop got confused when the owner of the NY plated car (Will) being pulled over was sleeping in the Saab with Maine plates but the driver was not from Maine! I asked Chris if he recalled this, which he did, but neither of us could remember if a ticket was given, we think not; we were probably given a tourist style warning. The main thing is the deer herd went unharmed, all vehicles were unharmed and we were still intact on our way to Red Rocks!

We got to the I-70 Red Rocks State Park exit and since I had been there the year before I thought we should go on to Golden to the motels there. We wound up at the Super 8, which was pretty nice back then. This was the longest Chris and I had been in one location for two weeks. I recall tickets being pretty easy to find, but the first night we were on the backside of the park in Morrison about 2 PM and looking for tickets when we get offered two tickets for face. By the time we made it back to the gates the rest of our crew had scored tickets. Since I was the only one of the crew who had been into the venue (in 1982) I was put to the task of deciding which parking lot to go to and thus entrance you go wait in line at (in some lots you have a choice of 2 entrances). I think we chose the middle lot side entrance on this day. We were close enough to the front of the line that we scored an amazing spot about 6 rows from the front.

I thought this first set was great with some songs that had been low in rotation during this tour; the Alabama and Duprees namely. The Birdsong > Lazy Lightning was also sweet. The recording on this night is pretty up front with us being so close to the stage. There are some Jim Wise recordings from this location which he calls it "the mouth of the stage" as the area is very wide and not as steep as some amphitheaters at that point where the empty space between the stage lip and the first row is. Any of the 6-10 rows up there the music is as "in your face" as it gets along with great sightlines. Second set highlights included drums and space; Mickey, Billy and Phil went all out for this show using the acoustics of the rocks to really set a musical scene. Phil Lesh writes in his book that this tour he was wooing new girlfriend Jill and they drove across the country from Eugene all the way through the tour. Phil mentions trying to impress her and letting off many bass bombs for her (and us!) at the three Red Rocks shows. Most of the second set is this bombastic yet playful playing from Phil and in your face guitar from Jerry with Bobby expertly leading from behind letting them take over.

I recall this being one of those Red Rocks experiences which drew me back every time they played there and again for H.O.R.D.E. with Blues Traveler then Widespread Panic over the years. The raw resonant sound of music, ANY music is so wonderfully shaped as to somehow make everyone who attends a show there aware of this magic. I consider Red Rocks a combination of musical church and spiritual oasis.
