****Listening to set 2 on headphones will greatly enhance the experience as the binaural recording method uses microphones at the ears.****

Recording Notes:
Upon entry, I was forced into the floor area and sat down next to these guys setting up a pretty intensive recording rig. It wasn't my seat, but I must have seemed like I belonged as the guys said, give us your cables to patch out. I was surprised but gave them my RCA's and wound up patched into a Sony PCMF-1 Digital signal processor out the chain into my TCD5M, fourth in line. I think they recorded into a Sony Beta recorder but am not certain. After the first set the guy next to me says, "who are you? My friend says he doesn't know you." I said my name and that I didn't know him/them either. They unplugged me and I decided to go up to my hotel room and grab my JVC headphone microphones for second set. I sat in my ticketed seat in the Loge about 40 feet directly behind the sound board and wore these JVC Binaural headphone mics the entire set.

============================================================================
Las Vegas Dead! I was not scheduled to be at this show when I left Syracuse. Once I arrived in Tempe my host Cliff informed me that his crew was going to take $25 hopper flights on Southwest to Vegas the following day for the show. I was not scheduled to fly out of Phoenix until that Monday so I threw myself in with his crew. We were in a plane before noon that day and checked in at the Aladdin by 4! It was quite a rowdy time in the ol casino along with several thousand other Deadheads. All afternoon and into the night "paging Mr. Jack Straw, Mr Jack Straw to the white courtesy phone please", "Paging Mickey Hart, Mickey Hart to the white courtesy phone please"! Every band member, every character from Dead songs you could imagine was being paged- I do recall "Stella Blue, Miss Stella Blue", and an echo from the past, "paging Mountain Girl, Miss Mountain Girl". It really was entertaining!

My final two recollections I can tell: At the beginning of my night I was at the door to the theater about 5 persons from the front and we had a discussion with the 30 something security guard before he let us in. "Is it sold out tonight?"-"Yes". "Are we the rowdiest crowd ever for this theatre?"
"Are you kidding- we had Van Halen in here last week, their fans destroyed a bunch of stuff, you folks seem much more mellow than that." So funny. As a result of being close to the front of the line, once we were allowed in I was forced into an area on the floor which wasn't near my ticket. (The story in the show notes)

At the end of my night I was having problems getting to sleep and it must have been 4AM or so when I wound up at one of the side lounges which were mainly for the waitresses to get drinks to the floor. Some live band was playing. They were a 4-5 piece band with 3 female singers. I remember a trombone player and the songs were Motown and the usual early 1980's bar band standards.At least 100 drunk and partying deadheads are in this side lounge just cheering and whooping at each solo and really egging the band to play on. They go off the stage which should have been their night and the deadheads are hollering "ENCORE, ENCORE" it was hilarious and the crowd did get the band out for an encore. I am certain the band saw the sun come up as they were heading home.

Then we flew the Southwest hopper back to Phoenix. And it really was a hopper. I recall getting on, the flight attendants serving one drink, asking us to drink fast, then taking the cups and landing. I'm betting less than one hour in the air. Like any Vegas plane load it was filled with hopeful smiling heavy drinking people on the way there and disgruntled disheveled people, in our case deadheads on the flight out. I am sorry listening back that these recordings aren't on the better side of what we did in that timeframe, but have enjoyed prepping them and hope they convey some of the experience of catching the Grateful Dead at a middle period in their progression. Just before the huge 1987 lift in popularity and at the start of the peak years for Brent Mydland.
