This was one of the first shows at Pozo that I went to, back when the ‘stage’ was nothing more than the pack porch of the saloon. The Pozo Saloon is a 100+ year old former stage coach stop, located about 15 miles out in the county, north east of San Luis Obispo, CA. This recording isn’t bad for an audience, but there is some crowd noise (talking) in places. I would have liked to have tried to get a board patch, but there were two other acts on the bill and I was already set up up front.

In later years, the owners of the Pozo Saloon would build an elaborate stage further back in the pasture, and thus be able to bring in larger acts with more people and eliminate the blocked sight lines caused from the various tall trees directly behind the saloon. I think it was a much more intimate setting in the old days, like this show, when the performers would play on the back porch of the saloon.

The Pozo Saloon is very remote, and at one place in the show John Dawson comments on this fact saying that he was lucky to have found it. Supposedly, when Bruce Springsteen needed a remote location midway between the bay area and San Diego to meet with Clarence Clemons, he picked the Pozo Saloon. Apparently No one even recognized them!
