boombox's notes january 2017:
My favourite guitarist after Jerry Garcia, Slick Aguilar, back in the UK, and accompanied by TC and Mark Karan no less, to do one of THE live albums of all time? As a fan of Slick's for over fifteen years and as a Deadhead of over 35 years, this was a no brainer. The audience seemed quite sparse at first, but soon filled up as the three support acts did their thing - a short acoustic Auburn set was followed by singer-songwriter, Steve Henderson, and then local boys, The Worried Men, threatened to blow the lid off - their Neil Young medley alone made me a convert.

And so to the main event. For those who need a brief update, Slick was Paul Kantner's axeman of choice through the KBC and later Jefferson Starship years, Mark Karan played as part of The Other Ones and Bob Weir's Ratdog, and TC of course tinkled the ivories in the Dead's early years. Slick also appears with other SF alumni as The Airplane Family with Peter Kaukonen and Prairie Prince handling the bass and drums for both groups. However, for this tour, bass and drums are being covered by two Brits, Tony Morley and Richard Newman, who have both occupied the JS drumstool at some point. What only very rarely showed was that the band only got together for their first rehearsal at 2pm the day of this, the first show of a seven night tour. Suffice it to say, all five musicians performed brilliantly and did justice to the legacy of the band and the album.

The recording came out very well - an excellent mix and not too many talkers. Disc split is where it is simply because that was the only time they stopped playing until the end of the set. Few breaks also meant little work to do on loud clappers nearby.
