NOTES

:  Levels were pretty low on CD2; I used Cool Edit 2000 to amplify it to a level roughly equal to CD 1.  Otherwise, no editing was done.

:  About the venue, or "What happened to the Kalakala?" 
This show was slated to be held on a long-retired passenger ferry under restoration in Seattle called the Kalakala, recently towed down from Alaska where it was stranded.  We had purchased tickets online for the show, and were exicted to see the boat and dance it up to KDTU on the water.  A day or two before the show, however, I got email and a phone call from Karl's ticketing folks letting us know that the venue had moved to a different venue called the Superhighway (I'd never heard of it).  Apparently there were concerns about gang violence at Karl's show by the Kalakala promoter, due to a misunderstanding of the type of music and the crowd it would attract; as a result of the fear of damage to the vessel and jeapordizing future shows, it was cancelled there.  Talk about misguided concerns...Karl plays on and the boat now sits idle...

The Superhighway is (was?) a basement late-night DJ club, in the old part of underground Seattle, chosen at the last minute as a substitute venue.  The entry to the place is the entrance to an apartment building; we found the address, scratched out heads, and waited at a tavern down the block until the appointed hour when the doors were supposed to open.  A gate to the "apartment" opened and a handstamp stand was set up at the top of some uncarpeted stairs; unsure what to expect, we got our stamps and followed the stairs down to a sprawling many-roomed brick cavern of delights with day glo sculpture, a DJ, room after room connected together by brick arches and doorways, lots of couches, more artwork, beverages...  This was a last minute arrangement, so the band was set up on the floor in a large low-ceilinged room - no stage.  It was just a fantastic place to see a show.  We stood on a couch about 5 feet from the band and took in an amazing set of funk and jazz .  

I looked long and hard to find a copy of this great night of music; this is a *fine* recording.  Enjoy!
