That goal competed with the primary goal of enjoying the show in the moment and sometimes lost. I often wore the condensor mic clipped above the brim of the baseball cap which I had cut a slit in to accept the clip. It was a tough time for tapers and this actually proved to be quite stealthy as well. I would try to give extra tapes and batteries to friends, in case the man felt he needed to take mine. Not recognizing at the time the benefit of higher grade tapes I usually brought less expensive, normal bias tapes to the shows, I didn't want to give nice tapes to over zealous security guards. Tapes from the shows were then immediately copied to higher grade, chrome or metal tapes which I called "masters". The orignal normal bias tapes then went into boxes and were left alone. The 1st gen "master" tapes were then played only to make copies for friends, the car etc. They only went into the deck to make a copy. So I have good 1st gen copies too, just in case. I was certainly not what you would call a serious taper, and my gear wasn't serious either. So set your expectations real low and you won't be disappointed and if you see an alternate copy of the show, grab it. The Capital Theatre was a favorite of mine starting in High School. I guess nobody brought enough tape to this show. As far as I know this is the only tape of Good Lovin' and Lovelight. As Iko Iko started I was at the end of my last tape side, so the last three songs were taped onto the ends of the previous tapes, and so there are several tape flips, and Lovelight cuts early, sorry bout that. It's a mystery to me, how at that point in the night, I still had enough wits about me not to tape over earlier parts of the shows. Another mystery is what I was doing at a double bill with only 3 tapes. Could be I got separated from friends holding tapes, or a security guard separated me from some tapes (they had a habit of that at the Capital, negotiations would start with the deck, but I always managed to get them to settle for tapes, batteries or both). Could be I just came unprepared, that memory is lost. I do recall what fun Bill Kreutzmann and his banter with the audience was. If you get enjoyment from this, I've achieved a third and unexpected goal. Who would have guessed (in 1986) where we'd be today. Moontoons 09/24/2015
