OFFICIAL SHOW NOTES: LINEAGE: RTR @ 7.5 I.P.S. > VAULT PCM > UNK. # OF A > D > SEED CD-R > SSSB; Jerry Garcia Band members: "Buzz" Buchanan (percussion), Jerry Garcia (guitar / lead vocals), Donna Jean Godchaux (backup vocals), Keith Godchaux (keyboards), John Kahn (bass), Maria Muldaur (backup vocals); any/all editing, fades, NR, hiss elimination, phase shifting, time smear correction, digital jitter elimination, EQ, and quantization noise elimination (when up/down-converting audio for CD or DVD mastering), were all performed using 24-bit / 96 kHz digital realm processing at Serafin Station Studio B [using the "code name Harpoon" editing software V1.001.04 Build 499] [this show was released 08/02] JAY'S PERSONAL COMMENTS: NOTE: THE ORIGINAL TEXT FILE WHICH ACCOMPANIED THE SHOW IS AT THE VERY END OF THIS TEXT FILE! Sometimes, it's very difficult to work on other people's copies of shows. Some info may be in error, the quality isn't always known until the show is physically here, and so forth. This show is a good example of almost all of the above items, plus a little more. When I transferred the audio from my Marantz Studio CD transport deck into the digital input of the editing computers, one of the first things I noticed, just from casual listening, was that this show was compiled from more than a single source. I say that with full assurance, due to the fact that the audio is completely different in it's quality, amount of hiss, etc. in FOUR distinct sections. Disc 1 (this updated version) is made up of 2 sources, Disc 2 (this updated version) is from a single source, and Disc 3 (this updated version), which is the 2nd part of Set II, has 2 difference sources. On the original "raw" audio, it's very noticeable. I have tried to make all the sections less noticeable in their differences, but one will still be able to tell. The biggest problem with this show was not the different sources, but the amount of hiss. On all but one of the original sources, there are at least THREE analog generations, and for one song, there is FOUR analog generations; this does NOT include the original RTR. By putting the "quiet sections" through a special software spectrum analyzer, I was able to isolate distinct hiss "patterns". Every analog dub will have it's own unique quality of hiss/inherent noise. Plus the show is almost totally "monophonic", except for the hiss. This tells me that one or more of the generations was made through analog decks which were out of alignment, OR someone tried to eliminate some of the hiss by editing the show with the left/right channels just slightly panned. I cannot tell for certain which of these 2 probabilities is the "correct" one without knowing every person who "handled" this show from it's inception. But, enough of the really "not too good" news. The bottom line with this show is that, while it still has a fair amount of analog hiss, it has been GREATLY reduced (on some songs, by as much as -38 dB, which is a huge amount! There comes a time when an audio engineer has to make a choice: whether to leave some hiss in the audio and allow the higher frequencies to come through (cymbals, the harmonics of the middle and upper frequencies of instruments, etc.), or remove more hiss, and make the show sound dull, muffled, or even introduce unwanted audio artifacts such as phasing and flanging. I went for the "former", removing as much hiss as possible without corrupting the audio, and still preserving as much of the high frequencies as possible. So, the end result now is you all have a better show overall, with some hiss left over. This is NOT a show which is in circulation widely, otherwise I would have tried to get a better copy to work with, and make that for StarDoggy to use as his "seed" copy. I know of 2 other people who have this show, and they both say their copies are almost unbearable to listen to! PERSONAL RATINGS: (on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being excellent) Audio Mix: 7 Audio Quality: 7.5 Energy Level: 8 "Completeness": 9 (just the missing between-song lulls, etc.) Surprises: The "Close Encounters" tease notes played during "Lonesome". Really fits in well. . _ - _ . _ - _ . _ - _ . _ - _ . _ - _ . _ - _ . _ - _ HERE IS THE ORIGINAL TEXT FILE WHICH WAS ON THE CD-R DISCS SENT TO ME FROM ADAM DWYER (a.k.a.
