The Barry Flast Collection

Barry Flast was a musician who played with the who's who of the Rock & Roll world for 45 years. He was also a prolific music collector who always  had a tape recorder going every place he went. Barry passed away in November 2013. His wife has generously offered to share some of his music  collection with the music trading world. This project will be ongoing for a long time to come. Barry collected thousands of soundboards, audience  recordings, and various home recordings & compilations. Many of them will be shared over the coming months and years.

Comments:

This show was part of The Harmonic Convergence celebrations, the first globally synchronized meditation event which took place on the 16th and 17th of August.

This show is particulary interesting, and very well played, because the setlist features a number of songs that you wouldn't normally hear from Kingfish.  The reason for this being the presence of "Cowboy Jazz"

It was the first time that Barry Sless and Arthur Steinhorn played with the band.  While researching this show I found this included in a Bio of Barry:-

"In the early 1980's Sless was a member of the seminal western swing band Cowboy Jazz recording two highly acclaimed albums:  "Swing Boogie," and " That's What We Like About The West," both on the Rounder label.  The Maryland band performed a unique and heady brand of western-swing music and toured nationally performing at clubs, roadhouses, and music festivals.  It was while touring with Cowboy Jazz in Colorado in 1987 that Sless received a phone call from Matthew Kelly from the band Kingfish asking if he'd be interested in playing with the San Francisco band at an upcoming show celebrating the Harmonic Convergence in Telluride, Colorado.  So Sless, and then Cowboy Jazz drummer Arthur Steinhorn, joined Matthew Kelly, Barry Flast, and Anna Rizzo for a new edition of Kingfish.  "Matthew wanted somebody to round out the band after the tragic accident that killed David Merrill," Sless somberly reflected.  So began Sless's tenure in one of San Francisco's most beloved bands."

Barry's pedal steel added another dimension to the band's sound, hopefully Rick will come across some more shows that includehim in the line-up when he is sorting through Barry's Collection.
