I mentioned in one of my posts in the last couple of daze about this PoNR Studio E 
rehearsal jam cd I have and offered (again) to the list. A few of you have written 
to inquire the authenticity of this jam, since I identify it as the *first* full 
run-through of the new PoNR composition (first composed at Chester's in Fayetteville 
a couple of  days earlier; we've seen this impromptu song creation action before with 
KVHW, when they wrote Spring Water before our very eyes and ears at 4th St. Tavern in 
San Rafael sometime earlier that spring in '98).  The band went directly into the 
studio from Arkansas to rehearse for their NYC/Wetlands debut a day or so later.  
Here is the origin of this 10/13/98 PoNR rehearsal jam from Studio E, fyi:

On 10/13/98, Studio E in Sebastopol invited me to come for a visit, immediately after 
the band got back from Fayetteville, AR.  I took Mark Carr and Calico with me as 
additional  guests.  When we got there that evening, Steve asked me if we would stay 
to hear some music with him that they "had laid down in the studio that day."  Yeah, 
like twist my arm, Steve! ;^)  So he seated us in the dimly-lit sound room of the studio, 
on a nice buttery-leather couch, passed around a phatty for us, sat down at the console 
and put on the headphones (like Captain Picard) and let this music rip through the studio 
sound equipment.  What an experience!  This was Steve's first time hearing PoNR all the 
way through, too, since they had just noodled/composed it 2 days before at Chester's in AR.  
It's breathtakingly beautiful, and the studio only got  this "rehearsal" because Kene, 
studio-owner/recording tech happened to flip on a tape at the moment they launched into 
the jam earlier that afternoon.

After the music concluded, we were all stunned.  In the silence, I took a deep breath 
and asked Steve very tentatively, "Steve, can I have that?"  Calico gasped and gave me a 
startled look. :^)  There was a loooong pause, and Steve smiled and said, "sure."  So 
that's how I happen to have this music today.  (The original cd from Studio E was from 
a tape recorded over, so when Steve first flipped the switch, a voice from the previous 
material said, "Let's see what we can do...." Steve laughed and thought it was cool to 
have as a prelude to this jam.   Somehow that comment has been edited off the cd copies 
I have available to share now, darn it.  I'll see if I can get it restored. :^)

Subsequent to that disk I released at large (it's appeared as filler on a lot of trades 
since then), I got the idea to put the *first* PoNR jam and the *last* one (at that time), 
9/19/99 Fillmore (professionally recorded by SRS), onto the same disk.  I  busily made a 
primo copy, with assistance from Mark Carr, taper-extraordinaire (nice job, MC).  Then one 
evening I encountered Steve alone (in the living room/kitchen of San Rafael Studios where 
KVHW had been rehearsing for their fall tour last year) and ran over to put this disk on 
the house system.  HAH! I thought.  This'll get 'im!  My intent was to ask him for his 
blessing to release this disk as a gift to the fans for Christmas from KVHW.

Steve listened to the 9/19/99 version (which was first on the disk) and in 90 seconds 
proclaimed the guitars to be "out of phase."  Whaddan ear!!  Even the studio techs 
couldn't hear that.  They had to put it on the mixing monitors to see that fact.  Steve 
finally told the studio to "remix that to perfection and give it to her for release." 
Wahoooo!! *^)

By this time Alan, Bobby and Ray had joined Steve in the kitchen and the original 10/13/98 
rehearsal jam was playing on the cd.   They had not heard this (only Steve had, as far as 
I know, and not for a long time), so they were pleased and intrigued listening to themselves.

Yeah, it was a very fun moment, and one I will always treasure.

Did the studio ever "perfectly" re-mix the 9/19/99 Fillmore version of PoNR for me (which 
they had professionally recorded that night)?  Not sure.  I ran at least one remixed 
version by Charlie Dirksen, on studio equipment, for his opinion, but Charlie later sez 
he can't hear much improvement in the final version I produced.  So, hmmmmmmm....but it 
still sounds great!   (Thanks, SK, for your gracious generosity with the music, and for 
being such a good sport about it while I was such a pest ;^)

And that's how we came to have this sweet little compilation disk of PoNR for posterity 
(with genu-wine Ray White vocals!).  fyi.
