This was my 13th time seeing The Tragically Hip and my 11th time recording them. The snowstorm had begun late the night before and it was clearly a wild Canadian winter wonderland! Having moved to BC from Montreal several years earlier, I hadn't seen this much snow in years. My drive from Red Deer (where the previous night's show was) to Edmonton was quite insane with plenty of cars going off the road and hanging out in the ditch as if to remind everyone how precarious the drive actually was.

This was my first time in Edmonton and I liked it quite a bit. It was also nice to get out of that hole in the wall hotel and into something much more reasonable and with working wifi too. I had a very short time to do some site seeing on my way to Rexall Place which is also where The Edmonton Oilers hockey team call home. The venue itself was strangely round but I was happy to see a wonderful statue of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky at the front doors. Arriving early, I had a wait of about 20 minutes before the doors opened and then the usual 15 minute wait before I got okayed by security to get in with all my gear.

I was grateful see the crew there and as usual, they were wonderful in allowing me a small footprint within the SBD cage to put up my stand and set up my mics. I was originally going to run my Busman omnis to give them their first usage and had changed the caps at the hotel before I went to the venue but when I saw the placement of the chairs I put the hypers back on. The floor was stuffed full with chairs everywhere including less than a metre in front of the SBD cage and on the sides. It was seriously ridiculously squishy there and because there was a little room to get by in front of the SBD, it was always busy and full of people. I did run my Church omnis to try and get some of that richness and bass but definitely made the right decision about using the hypers.

This was a great show and the band were really on this night. This set was the longest of the Canadian leg of their tour to date running at over 2 hours long. The ticket I had for this show was DFC but behind the board up in section 110. I stayed on the floor at the board for this one. Unlike the Cranbrook show where I was in the 2nd row all night, the Kamloops show where I was in row 6 and the Red Deer show where I was in row 7, I was just too far to shoot video with my little camera. I did take a few more pics that usual.

Again, I'd like to express my enormous gratitude to the band for allowing tapers and to the crew for putting up with us, giving me the needed footprint and even sticking up for me when over-zealous security where being morons. Their help and support was greatly appreciated not to mention the amazing job they did. Your hard work night after night is greatly appreciated. Bravo and thank you!
