Set 1 tracks were named d1txx as normal, but ALL 2nd set tracks are named d2txx - even though the 2nd set cannot fit onto an 80 minute CD. I wanted to figure out a tracking that would make the whole show fit onto two 80-minute CDs, by creating a fade-out after Black-Throated Wind (last track on disc #1), and prior to The Last Time (first track on disc #2). Normally I would name the fade tracks as (for example) d1t12b and d2t00 - this way alphabetic sorting of the tracks still gives the correct sequence. I couldn't think of an easy way to come up with names for the fade tracks where their function and place in the file layout was obvious. (And I think it does *need* to be obvious). One of the advantages to fade tracks is that even when copying CDs without offset correction, or with hardware that loses the first few, or last few samples of a source disc, the integrity of the audio in the "middle" tracks is maintained. (The audio may be offset, and the track breaks shifted, but this should be consistent and therefore even re-extraction then burning to longer media should preserve continuity, without a silent gap or click at the rejoin). The original .shns were accompanied by separate seek tables, and the last tracks of each set (Bird Song jam, and Gloria) were cut to an incorrect CD sector boundary. And ... finally ... there was a short dropout at 11 seconds into Blackbird (it's during the tuning etc before the song starts, so maybe it isn't crucial) ... but ... I have my own MD master made from mics mounted on Jan's stand - so I patched the missing 9 seconds from Blackbird after eq'ing and messing about with the version I already had. The patch runs between 0:13 to 0:22 in the new .wav file. (I added some silence at the beginning as well, in order to make a short gap after the end of the first set when using my 2-disc layout). I decided to rename and recreate the files, this time with seek tables appended, using conventional file naming, and with the fade tracks as well. So ... All of the .wav files in this set are the same as Jan's originals, except for Bird Song jam and GLORIA - which are merely shntool -fixed versions of the originals; Blackbird, which is patched; and the fade tracks, which are added to the collection. But even the .wav files that are unchanged have different .shns, on account of the appended seek tables. If you already have Jan's original .shn set, but want to use the new layout, with fades and patched Blackbird, you only need: * Blackbird (d1t12) * Disc #1 fade-out (d1t12b) * Disc #2 fade-in (d2t00) * (Use the correct cue sheets for Jan's original filenames) * You might also want to run "shntool fix rd2002-07-10d1t11.wav" in order to add the correct number of silent samples to the end of this track. * You might also want to run "shntool fix rd2002-07-10d2t11.wav" in order to add the correct number of silent samples to the end of this track. Since the fade-outs are redundant, if burning to a longer media, they should simply be omitted. Thanks to Jan for this great recording, and for letting me put my mics on his stand at the show :-) alimac@netcomuk.co.uk 28th July 2002
