Noteworthy China Cats and Riders (A Collection)
This is a collection of noteworthy versions of China Cat Sunflower and
I Know You Rider played by the Grateful Dead. It is very closely based
on a list put together by Eric Wybenga and published in his book _Dead
To The Core: An Almanac of the Grateful Dead_. Four of Eric\'s
recommendations have been released commercially and so were problem-
atic here. In two cases (Feb 14, 1970 and May 2, 1970), I replaced
his recommendation with a similar version played within a week or two
of the one he liked. In a third case (June 26, 1974) we have an
excellent Jerry Moore audio which is used here. In the fourth case
(Dec 29, 1977) there was neither a publicly available audience source
nor a similar alternative, so that was omitted from this collection.
The track names are self-explanatory: they list the date of the
performance, the SHNID of the source, and shortened names of the songs
included in the track. In each case, the music in these tracks is
exactly the same as the music from the source indicated by the
SHNID. I joined the songs into jams using \"shntool join\", I trimmed
occasional extraneous material from each end of the jam using Nero
WaveEditor, I fixed up the resulting wavs using \"shntool fix\", and
then I compressed the files using \"flac --best\". I used shntool
version 3.0.2 and flac version 1.1.3. I did not add any fades, or fix
the levels across sources, or otherwise modify the music.
More often than not these are China Cat Sunflower > I Know You
Rider jams. I included other songs in some of the jams when they
seemed inextricably intertwined with the China Cat and/or Rider.
