Comment
On 28 April 2024 at Union College in upstate New York, English-born pianist Paul Lewis returned for the fourth and final installment in his traversal of Franz Schubert's piano sonatas. Audience members were enchanted and mesmerized by Mr. Lewis' sensitive and eloquent performances of these three crowning solo piano works, all deriving from the summer of 1828, the last year of Schubert's life. In the first portion of the recital, Lewis presented the brash, unbridled Sonata in D Minor, D. 958, as well as the creatively complex and thematically ambiguous Sonata in A Major, D. 959. After intermission, he completed the trilogy with Schubert's last work in the genre, the majestic, serene and glowing Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960.
