Legendary rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix played two sold-out concerts at the OU Field House on May 8, 1970.
The concert came as anti-Vietnam War tensions were heightened on U.S. college campuses. OU had its share of campus protests.
Four days earlier, on May 4, 1970, Ohio Army National Guard troops opened fire on student protesters at Kent State University, killing four and wounding 9 others.
Shows were at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. After he left Norman he played to crowds in Fort Worth and San Antonio. Hendrix died of a drug overdose on Sept. 18, 1970 in London.
