30 Days of Dead 2017, dead.net, Various
Set 1
Day 01
Uncle John's Band
Hint: One of the Grateful Dead's earliest, most successful singles, it was gone from the repertoire for more than two years before reappearing in time for this tour. It would later that same year disappear again, also for more than two years, before reappearing and sticking around for the final 16 years
Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Civic Center
1977-05-26
Uncle John's Band played a huge role in some classic 1977 shows, after being absent for all of 1976 until 1976-12-31. In October 1977, it would leave the repertoire again until later 1979.
Day 02
Easy Wind
Hint: A track played almost 50 times live 1969-1971, debuted just a few days before this version

China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider
Hint: A combination of songs that was rarely broken apart, and when it was, it was very newsworthy in the Grateful Dead taping community
Albany, NY, Knickerbocker Arena
1991-03-24
China>Rider was debuted as a combination in the Fall of 1969, but both songs had been in the repertoire for a while

Des Moines, IA, Des Moines Civic Center
1981-12-07
These two tracks from the Grateful Dead Records era we joined through the early 1980s mostly during the time when the Dead weren't playing Help On The Way>Slipknot!

Morgantown, WV, Coliseum - West Virginia University
1983-04-10
My Brother Esau was in the repertoire 1983-1987, and Might As Well was played from 1976 until the mid 1980s, and then only occasionally would it appear in the setlist

Hint: From Jerry's first solo record, a song in a rare show-opening slot

Day 12
The Other One>Stella Blue>The Other One>Sugar Magnolia
Hint: A big second set jam featuring some Bob, some Jerry, and some more Bob
Cincinnati, OH, Riverfront Arena
1976-10-02
From the second tour of the comeback year of 1976, the Dead played this excellent, interesting sequence, typically inventive of this tour. Please note the set-closing Sugar Magnolia is cut at the end on the master tape reel

Noblesville, IN, Deer Creek Music Center

Day 14
"Shakedown Street"
Hint: A repeat of this year's songs in 30 Days of Dead, but it's not joined to anything like the previous one, and it's too good to not play
Berlin, Germany, Internationales Congress Centrum
1990-10-19
"Shakedown Street" again, we hope you don't mind. We had this one and the Syracuse 84 one in mind for this for so long, we couldn't resist. This is from the first night of the two night run at the tiny ICC in Berlin.
Day 15
"Bird Song"
Hint: Another song from Jerry's first solo record. A big, soaring live version from the archivist's first show.
Hartford, CT, Civic Center
1987-03-26
This "Bird Song" is a great example of the peaks that song could attain, with some of the peakiest peak versions coming in 1987. This is from my first show, and even then, at 16 years old, I knew something special was happening
Day 16

"Seastones">"Playing In The Band"
Hint: A huge jam featuring a special part of the show, only played for a few months before the Dead's hiatus.
Paris, France, Palais des Sports
1974-09-21
Although Seastones (Phil and Ned Lagin's electronic interlude played between the first and second sets at Grateful Dead shows between June and October 1974) was usually a stand-along set, occasionally the rest of the band would join in and they would segue into Grateful Dead music, like here.
Day 18
"Scarlet Begonias">"Fire On The Mountain"
Hint: A double dose of Jerry-sung songs, common from 1977-1995.
Rochester, NY, Holleder Stadium
1979-09-01

Hint: Two tracks from 1970, played decades later.
Landover, MD, Capital Centre
1991-03-17
With a track from each of the Dead's 1970 masterpiece albums, "Truckin'" here segues into a re-born "New Speedway Boogie," brought back the previous month in Oakland after a two decade absence.

Port Chester, NY, Capitol Theater

Day 23
Comes A Time
Hint: Another new Garcia song that showed up, hung around briefly, then split for four years.
New York, NY, Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden
1971-12-04
"Comes A Time" debuted in 1971, was played a bit in 1972, and then disappeared from the repertoire until 1976.
Day 24
"Terrapin Station">"Jam"
Hint: One of the longer, more complex Garcia-Hunter tracks.
Greensboro, NC, Greensboro Coliseum
1989-03-31
This version of "Terrapin Station" flows into a very interesting jam before veering into "Drums."
Day 25
"Here Comes Sunshine"
Hint: A song that was in the repertoire for a year before disappearing for almost two decades, when it made its triumphant return.
Washington, DC, Robert F. Kennedy Stadium
1973-06-10
This song debuted on 1973-02-09 along with other Wake Of The Flood and Mars Hotel songs, but was gone after February 1974, to return at the end of 1992.
Day 26
"Help On The Way">"Slipknot">"Franklin's Tower">"Jam"
Hint: A trio of songs (plus a little extra) that was played for a couple of years, put away for six years, played for two, put away for four more years, to make a final return that would keep these songs in the repertoire until 1995.
Charlotte, NC, Charlotte Coliseum
1989-10-22
This is from the majestic Fall Tour of 1989, during which "Help">"Slip">"Franklin's" was brought back after a four year absence. In this version, which falls a few songs into the second set, the band plays a nifty spacey/MIDI jam going into "Drums."
Day 27
"So Many Roads"
Hint: One of the last batch of Garcia-Hunter songs
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Copps Coliseum
1992-03-21
This moving Garcia-Hunter song was played from 1992 to the last show on 1995-07-09. This version is from Bruce Hornsby's final run of shows as member of the Dead.
Day 28
"Here Comes Sunshine"
Hint: A very different arrangement than a version of this song that we played very recently here on 30 Days Of Dead 2017, different enough that it warrants a second playing.
Albany, NY, Knickerbocker Arena
1993-03-29
In late 1992, the Grateful Dead brought back "Here Comes Sunshine," played for the first time since early 1974. It was played right through to the 1995.
Day 29
"Friend Of The Devil"
Hint: An acoustic song that would be a part of the repertoire for 25 years, although the arrangement would change after the first six years.
San Francisco, CA, Fillmore West
1970-06-07
Originally an acoustic number recorded for American Beauty, "Friend Of The Devil" would also be played sporadically through to 1974 electrically. When it returned in 1976, it was in a slower tempo.
Day 30
The Music Never Stopped
Hint: Often a set-closer, the versions from the year this one was drawn are often considered the best. This one is no exception.
Philadelphia, PA, The Spectrum
1978-05-13
These 1978 versions of "The Music Never Stopped" were played to maximum power, with huge endings that indeed give the feeling of the music never stopping, which we felt was an appropriate way to end this year's 30 Days Of Dead.
Uncle John's Band
Hint: One of the Grateful Dead's earliest, most successful singles, it was gone from the repertoire for more than two years before reappearing in time for this tour.
