Mitch’s notes: Tut Taylor Archive Reel #282 is another fine recording of Tut & Friends from Nashville’s Exit/In on October 5, 1973. This reel appears to contain their first set and the first part of their second. Highlights include some fine twin mandolin picking by Tut and Norman on “You Are My Sunshine” and “Old Joe Clark”. During the second set, Tut tells a story about mandolin great, Frank Wakefield (track 12), and he and the group work their way through a number of attempts (“practicing”) of a tune that Tut refers to, in homage to Wakefield (who wrote a string of pieces called “Jesus Loves His Mandolin Player #1”, “Jesus Loves His Mandolin Player #2”, etc.) as “Jesus Fired His Mandolin Player”; this tune later appeared as “Oconee” in 1975 on the “HDS Sessions” LP, featuring Tut, Norman Blake, Butch Robins, Sam Bush, Vassar Clements, Jethro Burns, and David Holland.
