The band / performance:
Chris Corner makes a rare support appearance for his friend and idol Gary Numan. He takes a break from his weekly month long residency
at The Complex in Glendale. Those shows sold out in a few days time two months prior. Gary's original support act "Kitten" pulled out
unexpectedly one week prior to Gary's scheduled show. Gary and Chris have enjoyed a fruitful working relationship over the past six
years. Gary has remixed "Spit It Out" for IAMX's "IAMIXED" album while Chris has opened for Gary in the past and more recently directed
Gary's "I Am Dust" music video.
I have had the privilege of having seen IAMX on three prior occasions and this show was something completely different. Chris came
armed with a battery of digital and analog synthesizers and various guitar pedals and of course his muse/partner Janine. No guitar,
no bass, no drummer this time around. No spotlight or extravagant costumes. The arrangements were unique and very drawn out. They
performed only 9 songs over 65 minutes. This was a somewhat daring tactic for a support slot. They could have easily "played it safe"
by cranking through 14 or so songs in that span of time. What was perhaps the most impressive is that you could hear the uninitiated
become the converted as the show progressed. No easy feat for an opener. Chris' voice soars throughout the performance, especially on
the sparse arrangements of "Mercy" and "President".
