Opening night of a nine-day tour through the south & west. According to Elvis biographer Peter Guralnick, Elvis nearly OD-ed the night before & cousin/close-confidant Billy Smith had to summon Dr. Nick, who placed Elvis on I.V. meds. On this evening, just before stepping on stage, Elvis whispered into Billy Smith's ear, "You didn't think I'd make it, did you?" - then put on what Billy called "a helluva show."
