The song was written in Australia and Buddy "discovered" it while touring there. Johnny Greenan writes, "Dave Owens and I were the saxophonists in Johnny O'Keefe's band, the Dee Jays. We wrote the song after one of our dances ended in a brawl one night in 1958. After a couple of bourbon and cokes, we wrote the song. O'Keefe recorded it a few weeks later. His name was on as co-writer because he was the front man, as often happens. He also added a couple of things when he sang the song. It has been in about 9-10 movies. David Bowie liked the song. That is why 'Iggy Pop' recorded it. The greatest moment was and still is the use of it in the soundtrack of 'Pretty Woman'. Unfortunately Dave Owens and John O'Keefe are now passed on and playing in that band in the sky. We toured Australia with Buddy and the Crickets. They were great blokes. We kept in touch when they went back to the U.S. We were all very sad when Buddy was killed. It seems like yesterday. He was the one who took the song and published it in the U.S. So I owe a lot to Buddy. Without him, the song would never have gotten out of Australia." Released on
9/26/58-S, 2/81-A.
