National Day of Action for Tibet.
On June 15 1998, following the third annual Tibetan Freedom Concert, lawmakers and musicians rallied to call on President Clinton to push for Tibetan independence during his trip to China.
At the time more than 2,000 people gathered at the Capitol plaza to hear performances by Radiohead's Thom Yorke, David Crosby, R.E.M., Sean Lennon, and Perry Farrell. They also heard speeches by actor Richard Gere, Beastie Boys' bassist Adam Yauch, as well as lawmakers, environmentalists, and human rights activists… all who encouraged Clinton to speak out for Tibet.
Thom ended his performance with the words: "people have the power!"
