Short concert film by Dave Markey shown at ATP NY
with Sonic Youth, Nirvana and more
'This Is Known As The Blues Scale'
A short film by Dave Markey, described as a postscript to his classic
'1991: The Year That Punk Broke'. The full length film was shown on
Sat Sept 10th at the ATP festival in NY. The response was very
enthusiastic and the film had to be screened again at 2:45 AM or
something the next day. Having never seen the full length film, it
was amazing. Recall the 90s when Nirvana knocked Michael Jackson and
various other pop drivel off the charts? It seemed for a brief time
back then that real music was going to completely take over and the
film brought me back to that moment. The full length film has never
been properly released as a DVD even though Dave Markey put this great
short piece together way back in 2004. So the world is ready for the
DVD and some great bonus material is in the can, lets go people what
are you waiting for? Help the cause and go to

After the full length film was screened, Dave Markey took questions from
the audience. When that was done 'This Is Known As The Blues Scale' was
screened with the warning that this might be your only chance to see it.
Well, I suppose if you were at ATP NY you only had to wait until 2 AM or
so, but this may never be released was the point. The inevitable 'why not'
question was obviously brought up. I don't recall the exact answer, but
it had something to do with a blond whose demo tape was given to Sonic
Youth and no one wanting to sit down in a room to meet and hear the inevitable
requests for millions a song. Bummer. This little DVD here was hastily
thrown together from memory and has the wrong title, simply: 'The Blues Scale'.
It consists of most of Dave Markey's Q & A after the first screening and most
of the film 'This Is Known As The Blues Scale'. The sound is not great, but
also not bad for being captured in front of the left PA/soundsystem speaker.
The screening thing felt like some sort of happening, as did the whole ATP
NY thing.
Perhaps so, perhaps it was just a tiny off the radar blip where lots of people
had a lot of fun at a low key old school party with 2 stages of live music and
film screenings from Criterion. Anyway, thanks Criterion/ATP for flying Dave
out there and screening his films...Sorry that this was not a thought out thing,
it was spontaneous and as such the beginnings of both Dave's talk and his short
postscript film are missing...What I gots you gots...The sound is not great, but
not bad and it's listenable and therefore I can put this out there...It is what
it is... enjoy...
