Comment
About midway through the encore of Randy Describes Eternity a member of Camper Van Beethoven
would appear on stage and replace a member of Built To Spill. They did this one after another
until the whole of CVB was playing with Doug Martsch. As the performance neared its end and the
song was being musically deconstructed members were breaking down equipment and exiting the
stage - the single drum heard in the final seconds was the only one left remaining of the kit.
This post by "Etreewin" from the builttospill.com message board describes the scene in more detail:
"On Sat night, the encore for BTS is basically indescribable because of the almost 20 min chaos
during Randy Described Eternity. Imagine a packed house (mostly drunk), Jonathan Segal from CVB
comes out on violin for the start of the BTS encore (so a six piece on stage) and the band jams
for 3 or 4 mins. Then Greg Lisher from CVB takes the guitar from Brett Netson (BTS guitarist),
then David Lowery comes on stage and Jim Roth from BTS leaves, then Victor K. comes on stage
and BTS bassist Jim Roth leaves[sic], then Frank F. from CVB takes over drums from Scottie from BTS.
So at this point it is CVB backing Doug!
Then Scottie starts playing another set of drums, Brett Netson plays tambourine and there are
eight people jamming, then Frank switches out with Scottie(BTS drummer) and Brett Netson takes
over Violin from Jonathan. Finally Frank starts taking down the drum set (while Scott continues
to play), band members slowly leave the stage one at a time and everything slowly devolves from
about 8 instruments to just bass and literally one drum and Doug."
Opening acts were The Delusions (of Seattle) and Camper Van Beethoven.
