This recording was made by Knut A., who used to tape a lot of concerts in the Tromso-area in Northern Norway in the 1980s and early 1990's. When he passed away in 1996, his sister gave me access to his tape collection, and allowed me to transfer the tapes to CDRs. Unfortunately Knut had the habit of editing the recordings himself, and dub them onto other cassettes, after which he often erased the original tapes. This was unfortunately also the case with this recording of Rory Gallagher. The original master tape doesn't exist anymore, so that's why this transfer is made from a 1st Gen tape. This tape is the best surviving master. He may have recorded more of the show than what's included here, but this is all that remains.
I traded the original raw transfer of this Rory Gallagher recording with a couple of people in the late 1990's, but I've got no idea as to how well circulated it is. My intention was however always to clean up the recording, but I just recently came around to do so. I haven't done any attempt to remaster the recording; I've just fixed a few obvious flaws, and that's about it. No tampering with the recording itself. Here's what I've done: 1) Boosted the level about 1,7 dB on the concert and about 3,7 dB on the interview (track 10), 2) smoothened out a couple of tape breaks/cuts by adding rapid fade-ins/fade-outs to remove or disguise tape recorder noises (No music has been lost!), and 3) inserted new index marks. Otherwise nothing's done, but IMO this is still an improvement over the raw transfer that's been available until now.
During the concert there was a power failure that affected the guitar and bass amplifiers. This happened in the middle of "Bad Penny", when - for some reason - the whole back line suddenly shut down. The PA system was however still functioning, and the drums kept on playing. Instead of interrupting the concert, Rory picked up a harmonica and started to improvise over "Mellow Down Easy" until the power was restored to the amplifiers.
Track 10 is a recording from a radio broadcast by a local radio station (Radio Tromso), and features an interview with Rory Gallagher made the day after the concert. The recording is missing the very beginning of the interview, but I believe it includes the complete Q&A portion.
