NOTES:
The first trickle of Las Vegas recordings seemingly begins,
and it's only fitting that the very first show to surface is
the opening night's show. First up - the date. I've listed it as
11th November (am) as Prince took to the stage around 12:15 (am),
thus the show began then. Tickets, advertising, on-line sites, etc
date the opening of Club 3121 as 10th November, and that is correct,
however that is not the date the show took place - sorry if this
leads to confusion, but I stand by the date I have listed. Now to the
content. The recording itself is impressive however there are a few
minor sound dips during 'Spirituality' and 'Lolita' amongst others,
but they are very easily overlooked. Likewise, there is a little movement
during the mid-section of 'Joy In Repetition' but I only mention it
as I'm almost certain that this release (being the first to be released)
will be scrutinised unlike any other - best I mention it first. The audience
level throughout is unobtrusive and the only slight annoyance is the
whistling during the interlude preceding 'Purple Rain' - however Prince
is not onstage at the time, so it's a moot point. Being the opening show,
there is a certain hesitation in the performance and many of the tracks
are performed with little extended jamming and are rather basic. There
are obvious exceptions to the rule - in the case of a 12 minute version
of '7'(including the "Alright" chant from 'Forever In My Life' and a small
repeated vocal of "This song of the heart" from 'Song Of The Heart') which
has Prince teetering on the edge of preaching before he reigns himself
back in (thankfully). Likewise 'Pink Cashmere' is a lengthy 10 minutes and
includes a solo from Mike Phillips to extend the performance. Mention must
also go to the opening 'Spirituality' which actually sounds better than
most would imagine, and for entirely different reasons The Twinz version of '17 Days' which has a complete fuck-up on the opening verse. There are many
highlights to choose from, but for me the closing guitar crescendo of
'Anotherloverholenyohead' deserves high praise not least for the addition
of a tiny snippet of 'The Cross'. The majority of reviews I've read on-line
state that Prince seemed rather static and wasn't as improvised as we
have come to expect - and that's evident in this show. Not to say it's bad,
as most of his "average" performances are a million miles removed from
anyone else, however there is a certain spark missing. Whether this release
opens the flood gates to any others remains to be seen, however I'm pretty
hopeful most will be very appreciative that they have the opening show in
such impressive quality containing an enjoyable (if a little unadventurous)
opening night of Prince's 3121 stint.
