The Mahavishnu Orchestra as part of a double bill tour with Frank Zappa at the Cobo arena in Detroit on May 12, 1973
The band is really cooking and play a really great show this performance is one of my favorites.
During Oct-Dec 1972 Mahavishnu Orchestra used to tease their audience by playing the opening chords of "Meeting of the Spirits" and then launch into "Birds of Fire" !
At this show they do it again this time starting as if they are playing "Birds of Fire" but launch into "Meeting of The Spirits" without the opening chords, during 1973 they dropped the opening gong part and played it this way.
The encore "One Word" is not complete it ends 2 minutes after Rick Lairds solo and strangely there is no drum solo they must have had to cut it short, as Frank Zappa was the headliner it's quite possible a Zappa fan taped some
of the Mahavishnu Orchestra set or the last part of "One Word"
There was a full page story in English music paper "Sounds" May 26, 1973, about the concert it was to promote the Mahavishnu Orchestra tour in England in June and the reporter Jerry Gilbert mentioned when he was interviewing
John McLaughlin in the dressing room a CBS film crew were filming them and he mentions the CBS film crew more than once, alas no video of the concert has so far turned up.
