Wow!
Samantha Fox in my hometown!!!!! How cool is this, I thought. I was sorely mistaken.
A little historylesson : In the late 80´s, Sam Fox tried to tour in Sweden. Everybody was up for it.
Performing a couple of songs playback for 15minutes and charging about 5£/8$ for it was not, however,
considered fair by the audience. A big flop. Outrage amongst fans and newspapers followed.
Today, some 15 years later, a newspaper stated that Sam would be performing with "Her Band" at
Helsingborgs rockclub The Tivoli sept. 1st. The tickets cost 10£/15$ but hey - I was not going to
miss one of my favourite popqueens although the price was a bit steep. (Steep? It´s f-ing vertical! /Bottom)
Arriving at the show I notice that by band she meant two (2) keyboards and one (1) disconnected bass guitar.
Odd, but hey, I´ll live.
Lots of people turned up, a packed venue with about 450 people in attendance. The ticket states
"on stage 23.00". That was not true. "She´s resting" they said through the speakers, and played
some 80´s popmusic. At about 23.45 she graced us with her presence. Considerably later, but hey,
it´s Sam Fox for christ´s sake! She opened with 3 songs from the 80´s, I surrender, Do ya and...Touch me????
Her biggest hit? 3rd song of the evening? And "Her Band" consisted of two, less young, women who sat
behind the keyboards miming to the records. It wasn´t live, it was badly performed playback. They hadn´t even erased Sam´s
voice from the songs so that she sang live. She sang (croaked) over her own voice, like a real bad
karaokemachine (when she actually could remember the lyrics).
After Touch me 25% of the people left. There was nothing left for them. I was happy though, expecting
more cool hits after the mandatory "new songs". She started her new single,
Watching you, watching me. And now the audience, consisting mainly of men in their 30´s, drunk as hell, started
trying to grab her tits. Sad, but her whole act is about sex. I wonder if she was truly surprised.
Sam got angry, and hit two guys in their faces with the microphone. You can hear this during the song, first her warning :
"Don´t do it, don´t do it - alright?" and then a big "BUMP!". Cursing and acting like an idiot,
she insults the audience. F-ing idiot. But she says she loves some of us, so that´s alright then.
Then 4 more new songs (well, one was actually from the ´91 album, but who cares?). People had really
started to leave by now, and after her "latest hit", Santa Maria, she left too. "Goodnight Helsingborg"!
36 minutes into the show, me and Eric (a friend who´d also looked forward to this) were paralysed. And when
the DJ stated that "well, that´s unfortunately all..." I was in a rage feeling cheaper than a 10$ hooker.
I consider myself open-minded. I love music, all sorts, I see concerts weekly, and have a sincere interest
in music which takes me across Europe watching artists/groups I love performing live. This was my 191st
concert, and I have never ever felt so cheated. "It´s your own fault" you might say, but I really wanted to
see Sam doing the gig I was hoping for. 60 minutes long, about 10-15 songs, 3-5 new songs and 5-10 old songs. Yeah right.
In retrospect however, this is all a laughing matter. I even recorded the shit on md (which you probably
know if you found this link), for people to have a chance listening to this hilarious performance. At one
point her voiced croaked so bad she even shut up wondering what happened.
Well, well. Life will go on. 10£ short though.
