CAUGHT LIVE: PAUL WELLER.
‘FLY ON THE WALL’ ALBUM PROMOTION AT HMV
____________________________________________________________
Paul Weller started gigging with his first band ‘The Jam’ at small music venues across London, including the legendary 100 club on Oxford Street in the mid seventies.
Back then Paul Weller would not have thought that he would back in Oxford Street playing tracks from his successful solo career, which began in 1991, after fronting two world-famous bands (The Jam and The Style Council).
But 400 devotees turned out last night to see an energetic Paul Weller perform at the HMV store to premiere a selection of songs from his latest album Fly on the Wall. This 3-CD set features b-sides, remixes and rarities from his solo-career with Go-Discs and Island Records labels.
Much has been said about Paul Weller this year, especially after his last album ‘Illumination’ received disappointing sales despite reaching number one in the charts. As a result he parted company with his then record-label, Independiente. But there’s no doubt that Paul Weller is the MAIN force in rock music, proven by the lucrative multi-album deal that he has just signed with V2 records.
Opening the gig with Out of the Sinking he was bursting with energy from the off, with explosive guitar riffs and dynamic lyrics. So much energy in fact, that he could have been playing to a Wembley stadium-sized crowd, rather than the chosen few that were in attendance.
Paul looked athletic and lithe as he strutted around the stage, brandishing his guitar and interacting with the crowd.
As expected, it was the classics that really pleased. Town Called Malice, The Changingman, That’s Entertainment and In the Crowd were particularly resonant.
It was also nice to hear the likes of Broken Stones and Whirlpool’s End from his progressive rock album Stanley Road.
Paul Weller truly is a great songwriter and musician of three decades - great guitar-driven rock music from the seventies, smooth-soul music from the eighties culminating in his current sound of melodic rock.
Steve Cradock and Damon Minchella were skilled professionals on their guitars while Steve White was solid on drums.
At the end of the night, everybody who left HMV felt privileged to have been exclusively-invited to witness one of rock music’s all-time-greats. The gig also convinced the many people who bought copies of Fly on the Wall that it was money well spent.
Paul Weller live remains a must-see experience, full of excitement and spine-tingling energy.
