Comment
A sparkling mix of traditional and contemporary material performed by an extraordinary cast is what's on the menu for this lavish celebration of English female singers and songwriters.

From the royal family of English folk, Eliza Carthy (who also presents) and her mother Norma Waterson share the bill with the enduringly excellent June Tabor, star of 80s group Monsoon, Sheila Chandra, Liverpool singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams, Lamb front-woman Lou Rhodes and reclusive 60s folkstress Vashti Bunyan.

This is emotionally searching, soul-baring music, with songs ranging from Ewan MacColl's The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face to PJ Harvey's Down By the Water, all given inspired arrangements by Kate St John, who leads a special ten piece house band.

But though the themes are love, longing, pain, defiance, sex, violence and death, the concert's abiding mood is one of joy and humanity.
