Set 1
Roy Tyler & New Directions
Waterfront Blues Festival
Tom McCall Waterfront Park
Portland, OR.
July 3, 2005

Recorded from KBOO FM, a local all volunteer radio station. There is some inherent reception problems scattered throughout these recordings. The station is not very powerful and the team had some problems on the first day of the festival getting everything "plugged in". All in all some great music with a few tolerable "blurps".

Roy Tyler & New Directions
"Joyful, propulsive and absolutely infectious. The group's 'joyful noise' significantly narrows the line between traditional Gospel and contemporary R&B? Their courageous lyrics and modern take on the human condition is forthright and edgily honest." ?San Francisco music writer Joseph Jordan

Former Gospel Hummingbirds' lead tenor, Roy Tyler, and his Oakland-based quartet, New Directions, are quickly emerging as one of the nation's strongest new Gospel ensembles.

While rooted in the rich cultural wealth of the African American churches of the Deep South, the group's joyful music narrows the line between traditional gospel and contemporary R&B. Tyler combines soul-styled R&B, reggae, rock and blues into his brand of "Swamp Gospel."

Born and raised in Delhi, La., Tyler grew up singing in church and joined his first gospel group in high school. In 196, he moved to Oakland and joined the Spiritual Eagles and later teamed up with Joe Ardin Thomas Jr. to form The Gospel Hummingbirds. Tyler stayed with the Hummingbirds through most of the '90s, and appeared on the group's Grammy-nominated Blind Pig Records release,Steppin' Out.

Three Way Calling, Tyler's debut release on Severn Records, features guest appearances by Clarence Fountain (legendary lead vocalist for the Blind Boys of Alabama), and producer-musician Rafael Saadiq (the former Gospel Hummingbirds bassist/vocalist later was a founding member of the pop/R&B group Tony, Toni, Tone) and was produced by Jim Pugh (Robert Cray, Chris Isaak, Etta James).

"I'm hoping listeners will understand the things I feel and sing about," says Tyler. "This music has a heart, this music is in my heart. It sets me free. I've been given the freedom to sing what I think about. This 'Swamp Gospel' music is for everybody."
