12.12.69 Thelma Theater, Los Angeles, CA, recorded by Owsley Stanley

Phil Lesh drives the Dead through several sections of intense, feral jamming in this performance of "Caution". There are two edits to cover rell changes-one at 7:19 and the other at 40:03. We removed as little music as possible while preserving the musical flow. Personnel: Tom Constanten-keyboards, Jerry Garcia-lead guitar/vocals, Mickey Hart-drums, Bill Kreutzmann-drums, Phil Lesh-electric bass/vocals, Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan-harmonica/percussion/vocals, Bob Weir-rhythm guitar/vocals
2. "Passenger" (3:21)
5.19.77 Fox Theater, Atlanta, GA Recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson
Source: 7.5 ips two track master reel with dbx Type I noise reduction.
Phil Lesh said he wrote this song "to make the guitar players play with a little raunch." Shortly before the band launched into this sizzling performance, Donna Jean Godchaux called out "Play real loud!" This performance was selected for inclusion in the box set So Many Roads (1965-1995) but was cut at the last minute. Personnel: Jerry Garcia-lead guitar/vocals, Donna Jean Godchaux-vocals, Keith Godchaux-keyboards, Mickey hart-drums, Bill Kreutzmann-drums, Phil Lesh-electric bass, Bob Weir-rhythm guitar/vocals
3. "Terrapin~>Playing In The Band~>Terrapin" (2:54)
9.26.90 rehersal at Club Front, San rafael, CA Recorded by John Cutler
Source: stereo master DAT
A September 1990 rehearsal with Bruce Hornsby on piano and Vince Welnick on keyboards. They had completed their first American tour as a septet and were preparing for Europe. In these heavenly minutes, the Dead drift smoothly from "Terrapin" to "Playing In The Band" and back. Personnel: Jerry Garcia-lead guitar, Mickey Hart-drums, Bruce Hornsby-piano, Bill Kreutzmann-drums, Phil Lesh-electric bass, Bob Weir-rhythm guitar, Vince Welnicn-keyboards
4. Greatest Pump Song Ever Wrote (7:53)
Documentary oproduced by David Gans
Includes excerpts from "The Pump Song" (Mickey Hart, Rolling Thunder, GDCD 4011, 1972) and "Greatest Story Ever Told" (Bob Weir, Ace, GDCD 4004, 1972) This is the first feature I ever produced for radio, broadcast on the KFOG Deadhead Hour Fecruary 18, 1985. I was there to promote Peter Simon's and my book Playing In The Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the grateful Dead. I had interviews with Mickey Hart, Bob Weir, and Robert Hunter tracing the development of the song "Greatest Story Ever Told" from a recording of a pump on Mickey Hart's ranch to "The Pump Song" on Rolling Thunder to "Greateast Story Ever Told" on Ace. Mickey was kind enough to dig out the master reel and spin off individual trakcs and rough mixes showing how the Rolling Thunder version was built up from the pump tape.
