Delmark Records 50th Anniversary
Chicago-based Delmark Records is one of the oldest independent labels still owned and run by its original founder. It also boasts a treasure trove of nearly 350 titles that document a rich array of jazz and blues in their many different forms?from country to city, traditional to avant-garde. Chicago music and musicians have always been at the heart of the label's output. Legendary blues titles, some of the first recordings from Chicago's AACM, and discs from today's emerging players are included in the roster.
To mark the label's 50th anniversary, Delmark threw a blues bash at Buddy Guy's Legends that featured over a score of players associated with the label. In this two-part set of shows, we capture the excitement of the evening: a vivid snapshot of today's vibrant and varied Chicago blues scene and the label that has been preserving it all on disc for over five decades.
March 5 and 6?Part One
?House band? for the show?Johnny B. Moore and his group?kick off the program, which also includes veteran singer Bonnie Lee; two west side guitar heroes, Jimmy Dawkins and Jimmy Johnson; and an artist keeping classic Chicago blues going strong today, Willie Kent.
March 12 and 13?Part Two
Part two features one of the rising stars of Chicago blues, Jimmy Burns. Little Arthur Duncan, a player who has mastered the classic Chicago blues harmonica sound, is also on the bill, along with blues-gospel-soul singer, Shirley Johnson, and Howlin' Wolf devotee, Taildragger.
