Mahler 2003-??-??
Royal Albert Hall, London, England
Set 1
BBC Promenade Concert 2003
What a way to go! Maris Jansons chose to take his leave as Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at the Proms, and with a Titan of a symphony, Mahler's First. As the horns stood for their final heroic chorale, the symphony's exuberant affirmation seemed both a celebration of the past and the herald of a future which sees Jansons focusing his energies within Europe: first in Munich, then in Amsterdam - and- we hope, increasingly in Britain.
But when the Pittsburgh and Jansons were alone again for the Mahler, the sense of wonder returned, in a performance which miraculously balanced the First Symphony's tones of voice, levels of recession and allusions in a thrilling animation of a half-dreaming, half-waking conscipusness.
