with Bembaya Jazz
With his soul-inflected style, singer, songwriter, guitarist Oliver Mtukudzi is one of Zimbabwe's musical founding fathers and artist of global stature. His music has always articulated the struggles facing his country, not shying away from confronting a range of social issues, saying it's his message, not the beat, that sells the songs.
Bembeya Jazz are living legends of African music. Formed in 1961, they mixed popular Cuban and Congolese rhumba with Guinean traditional styles. Guitarists echoed the fluid melodies of the kora, horn sections harmonised ancient airs, singers affected the vocal dynamics of the griots to produce a cracking dance sound called Manding Swing.
