Set 1
L'il Queenie & the Percolators (featuring John Magnie and Tommy Malone)
?My Darlin' New Orleans? 45, circa 2/81 1. Wild Natives
Notes: This is the B-side of a vinyl 45 released only in New Orleans. Wild Natives, written by John Magnie and featuring him on lead vocals, is one of the earliest recordings featuring future members of the subdudes. L'il Queenie and The Percolators featured vocalist Leigh Harris (L'il Queenie); John Magnie on vocals and keyboards; Tommy Malone on guitar and vocals, Rickey Cortes on bass and vocals, Kenneth Blevins on drums; Fred Kemp on sax; and Charles Joseph on trombone.
Continental Drifters
Unreleased studio recordings, May 1, 1987 1. She's Alone
2. Opposites Attract
Notes: These studio recordings were made shortly before the breakup of the Continental Drifters, two months after the subdudes had already played their first shows. Within a month or so, the Continental Drifters would become (temporarily) defunct as the subdudes split off and moved to Colorado.
These two songs are among seven that were recorded at Visionary Studio in Metairie, La., on May 1, 1987. Featured on the recordings are Tommy Malone (guitar and vocals), John Magnie (keyboards, accordion and vocals), Johnny Ray Allen (guitar and vocals), Jimmy Messa (bass and vocals) and Carlo Nuccio (drums).
The recordings have a distinct ?80s feel, but already what would become known as the subdudes sound was already present - the emphasis on vocals and harmony, the accordion and indeed the actual songs that would comprise the early subdudes repertoire. Of course, ?She's Alone? would be featured a couple of years later on the first subdudes album, while ?Opposites Attract? remains unavailable elsewhere.

?Best of the Unsigned Bands,? 1988 1. Got You On His Mind
Notes: This is from a CD that contains an early version of Got You On His Mind that is unavailable elsewhere. The CD is, as the name says, a compilation of the best songs from Musician Magazine's 1987 unsigned band contest. The subdudes' contribution eventually attracted the attention of Atlantic Records, which signed them and later released their first album.
subdudes
Unreleased demos; circa 1988-89 1. Had to Get Away
2. What Would You Do
3. Down on His Luck
4. Hey Hey
Notes: The first three of these extremely rare early demos are from a cassette that circulates among collectors that's labeled "the subdudes: coupe demos '89." The fourth likely dates from the same era but is from a different (unlabeled) tape that includes some of the same demos above as well as outtakes or demo versions of many of the songs from the first two subdudes albums. (The fourth demo suffers from a moderate amount of tape hiss.)
Had to Get Away is an interesting, possibly autobiographical, explanation of why the subdudes (and presumably Tommy Malone) felt the need to leave New Orleans for Fort Collins. Hey Hey shows a rockabilly side of the subdudes that was never really pursued on record. The most interesting song, to me, may be What Would You Do, because I can't identify the lead vocalist. Is it Johnny Ray Allen? Steve Amedee? Although Allen wrote as many as a third of the subdudes songs, none of the recordings on CD feature his lead vocals. Or this could be Malone on lead vocals, processed heavily to where he's hardly identifiable. Both Malone and Magnie can be easily identified on backing vocals.

?Levi's Radio 501,? 1993 1. Down in the Quarter
Notes: This song (only 61 seconds) is from a promotional CD from Levi Strauss & Co. On it, Tommy Malone sings of, with the rest of the subdudes playing behind him, performing in the Quarter, meanwhile name-dropping Manuel's Tamales and reminiscing about rolling up his Levi's and playing in the Muddy Mississippi! Extremely rare! (Special thanks to Glenn Kincaid.)

?KBCO Studio C, Vol. IV,? KBCO-FM, Boulder, Colo., circa 1993 1. Angel to Be
Notes: This song is from a CD sold only to listeners of a Boulder radio station, KBCO. It was recorded in the KBCO studio and is unavailable elsewhere. The liner notes state: "The Dudes returned home to Colorado for this trial run of new songs not yet recorded for their 3rd CD release. Later that week, they would be among the first to perform on the stage at the newly reopened Ogden Theater. Before the session was finished, Steve Amedee had put down his tambourine and began beating out the rhythm on a plastic water jug. Too much fun!"

4 (You'll Be) Satisfied (recorded live at the World Cafe, WXPN-FM)
5 Tired of Being Alone (recorded live at KGSR concert, Austin, Texas)
Notes: These songs are from a CD that was sent to radio stations to promote the ?Annunciation? CD. It includes two studio recordings that are different from the versions of the songs found on Annunciation. It also includes three songs recorded live, as noted above. (The CD also includes the regular, CD version of the song Miss Love, which is not included here. The CD was never commercially released.
subdudes
WHPT-FM, St. Petersburg, Fla., probably Nov. 4, 1994 1. Angel to Be
2. Message Man

Notes: The subdudes performed four songs during a visit to WHPT's studio. The recording is probably from Nov. 4, 1994. These MP3s were recorded off the air during a rebroadcast in March 1995. Especially interesting is the Van Morrison cover that they never otherwise recorded (though performed occasionally in concert).
subdudes
?World Cafe, Vol. 1,? WXPN-FM, Philadelphia, Pa., circa 1995 1. It's So Hard
Notes: This song is from a CD sold only to listeners of the World Cafe. It was recorded in the WXPN studio in Philadelphia and is unavailable elsewhere.

4 Poverty (Recorded live at WMMR-FM in Philadelphia, 8/14/94)
Notes: These songs are from another CD that was sent to radio stations to promote the ?Annunciation? CD. It includes one studio recording of a song that is unavailable in any form elsewhere. It also includes three songs recorded live, as noted above. (The CD also includes the regular album version of the song Poverty, which is not included here, plus an alternate take of It's So Hard, which is identical to the version found on the Miss Love & Much Much Move promo CD (see above). The CD was briefly available commercially, and proceeds from the album went to the National Coalition for the Homeless.

Notes: This song is from a CD sold only to listeners of KMTT. It was recorded in the KMTT studio in Seattle on May 5, 1994, and is unavailable elsewhere. The liner notes say, ?The subdudes were in town to play the Backstage and they stopped by the Mountain Music Lounge to lay down this track. The group started out in new Orleans, then moved to Colorado (which might explain their wonderful, laid-back funkiness).?
