...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead Live at Ladybird Lake - Outdoor Stage - SXSW on 2022-03-17

Well it's hard to believe, but it took me 17+ years, since I started going to concerts, to finally see ...and you will know us by the Trail of Dead (okay yeah, I'm not typing that out every time, gonna be shortening it from here on out). I remember hearing their bootleg/recording of their Coachella 2004 set way back when, which then introduced me to their (then, relatively new) album "Source Tags & Codes", which I've loved ever since. I actually really liked some of their later albums too, but for whatever reason, I never caught them on tour, nor did they ever seem to be playing any festival I attended. Well what were the odds that during my very trip to Austin, the "hometown heroes" (as I heard them referred to by many during my stay there) would be playing a free show there? Of course I had to be there. I didn't quite know the layout of the city yet, nor how SXSW really worked, but I knew regardless of where it was, what time they were scheduled, etc, that I would have to be there. There was no way I was going to go to Austin, attend SXSW and not catch Trail of Dead if presented the chance to do so. 20 years may have passed, and many of my friends have grown up and moved on, but "Source Tags & Codes" still gets put on rotation every now and then for me, and I was thrilled to finally hear some of those tracks live. I actually really liked the stage/park layout they had created for the "Ladybird Lake" stage. The Austin skyline in the background was absolutely stunning to gaze at, and outside of the palm trees of Indio, it's hard to think of a better backdrop at a festival, at least from what I've seen. Another cool, and odd, thing at the park, they were handing out free apples as snacks for all festival goers. I've been to TONS of festivals in my life, but never have I been to one where they were handing out free apples to anyone and everyone. And thank God too, as I was starving at that point, having not really had a break from noon until now, with walking/rushing between venues. I do remember grabbing a slice of pizza or two while walking over the park, but the apple really hit the spot for me (that and some cold refreshing water I was able to refill up on). Btw, what the hell is Austin's (or Texas in general) obsession with sparkling water? I went to several shows during SXSW where they advertised free bottled water, only to find it was sparkling crap. I don't get it. Anyway, the band played a pretty solid show in my opinion and drew a decent sized crowd. But of course, it being a free show in the park, a lot of "talkers" tend to come out and attend these types of shows, and they were ever present here this night. I really don't get it, why can't people just be quiet while a band plays on stage? If all you want to do is talk with your neighbors, stay home and hang out on your porch, or at least wait until they're between songs (or even better yet, between sets). But I feel like I'm just telling/ranting at air at this point, some things will never change. Festival life... P.S. In honor of that old Coachella 2004 recording from 18 years ago, which had the band soundchecking in the beginning left in, I too decided to leave the band soundchecking in here too as the first track.  Enjoy!
